I'm still confused about why Days Gone was made. When you look at the timing the people making it had to know that The Last of Us Part 2 was also being developed. Whether they meant to compete or not. it was bound to happen. On top of that Days Gone didn't have a strong story or gameplay so it ended up being just okay not great.
Despite its mixed reception at first Days Gone Remastered was released on PS5 and PC last week bringing improved graphics quality-of-life updates and new gameplay modes. After not liking the original due to its confusing design and bad characters I decided to give it another try.
Days Gone Not Bad But Struggles to Stand Out
The pacing in the first few hours of Days Gone is terrible. The opening cutscene meant to explain the outbreak and make us care about Deacon St. John and his wife is a confusing mix of quick cuts and awkward dialogue. Then Deacon decides to stay behind to help his friend Boozer who clearly can handle himself.
The characters actions and motivations don't make sense from the start. When we skip ahead two years and go through quick tutorials. it feels like a challenge to get rid of the stabilizers.
So I'm trying to be more positive about Days Gone this time So I kept playing. I found my first outpost upgraded my bike and learned some new skills. The biking shooting and stealth became more fun. I'm enjoying it even though the enemy behavior is so predictable that I can take them out from far away without worrying about getting hurt.
There's something great about managing my bike's fuel and condition and how it reacts when I take my foot off the accelerator to go down hills or turn corners. I started to push the story and characters aside telling myself I would not take them seriously anymore.
Days Gone is a zombie biker adventure with a main character who talks to himself too much. It's more fun when you see it for what it is not as a PS4 exclusive trying to be as important as The Last of Us. It is not that even though it really tries.
How Days Gone Remastered Performs on PS5 Pro
Days Gone runs great on the PlayStation 5 Pro. It already got a patch to support 60 frames per second making this remaster feel like an extra bonus. On regular consoles you can pick between Quality (30fps at 4K) or Performance (60fps at 1080p). The Pro has an Enhanced mode that offers a balance between the two.
After about six hours of play. I saw few performance drops even during big fights with explosions. The extra details in the clothing or enemies and environment are nice though effects like fire and rain could be better.
This isn’t as good as the recent Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. which completely changed the original environments. Here it just feels like a light layer of polish. Unfortunately no matter how much they improve performance and visuals the gunplay and melee combat still don’t feel great.
The bullets hitting enemies and the sound of wood cracking against them feel weak. The enemies don't help and it feels like every attack I land is hitting something soft like a memory foam mattress.
If the story connected all these different parts well I'd be more forgiving. but the weak plot just makes me wish I was playing something better. Still there is a simple rural charm to it that keeps pulling me in as I play.
I'm not sure if it'll keep me interested until the end. but I can see why some people are obsessed with this game. However I can't agree that Deacon St. John is a good character. His acting is odd and he's full of clichés making it hard to like him.
Is Days Gone Remastered Worth Playing for Both Fans and Newcomers?
If you love Days Gone the remaster is just $10 and a great reason to play again. The low price new trophies and extra content like challenge and horde assault modes make it worth coming back.
Even with all the new visuals and improvements this is still the same dull open-world game. I'm trying to ignore the bad story and forgettable characters to enjoy the undead biker theme. but we will see if I can keep playing until the end.
