Tomb Raider fans have been waiting a long time for a new game from Crystal Dynamics. In the last two years. we have only seen updated collections of six older Lara Croft games but no brand-new adventure Now leaked info suggests there were once plans for more. Crystal Dynamics was working with Virtuoso Shanghai on a remake of Tomb Raider: Anniversary but it was cancelled.

We Came Close to Getting a Tomb Raider: Anniversary Remake

The project started in 2019 and was a team effort between Crystal Dynamics and Virtuoso back when Square Enix was still publishing the series. Recently the Tomb Raider Twitter account Infinity Trader shared leaked images of an early version of the remake showing what it could have looked like.

As you can see from the link above, the images show various unfinished renders including a recreated version of Anniversary's Lara Croft who appears to be younger and more detailed than the original game. The leak comes from Archive.org user ropir20606 who has shared some renders and given some context for the project.

According to him the remake started out as a simple port of Anniversary that was later turned into a major upgrade using the Rise of the Tomb Raider engine. The project was apparently cancelled a few months after it first became playable in 2019 due to complications with the engine merge as well as other reasons.

Lara's model photos were leaked before but quickly removed and now they’re only found in old archive posts. A Tomb Raider fan site CoreDesign has confirmed the leak is real. It's a bit sad especially since it's been so long without a new Tomb Raider game.
