The Minecraft movie had a pretty solid opening weekend. The latest video game film directed by Jack Black has grossed $301 million and more than doubling not only its lofty expectations but also its $150 million budget. For those who are surprised by these figures this is more than what the Super Mario Bros. movie grossed, which grossed $1.36 billion in theaters.
Like it, hate it or absolutely hate it, The Minecraft Movie has already proven that Warner Bros. made the right decision to move forward with their creation. Announced a decade ago, there were times when it seemed like Steve's foray into the Overworld would never see the light of day (all 20 minutes of it). Now that it has, its success will convince other studios that their games should be made into movies, but one studio that should be paying more attention than any other is the one responsible for Fortnite - Epic Games.
If Minecraft Works as a Movie, Fortnite Definitely Can Too
If there is one game on Earth more popular than Minecraft it is Fortnite. According to the latest data provided by Statista Fortnite has over 650 million players. Not only could that number be even bigger now since the data is more than a year old, but it is a also more than double Minecraft is lifetime viewership. If you think a Minecraft movie is a big deal, just imagine what the Fortnite equivalent could be.
Of course, I am not the first person to think so. No one at Epic is beating themselves up for not realizing this just yet. It is been rumored for several years that Fortnite could be heading off the Battle Bus and onto the silver screen. However, in a ridiculously timed comment considering the money being spent by the Minecraft movie, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed two days ago that a Fortnite movie is not in the works.
You have to imagine that in the 48 hours since Sweney wrote this and I wrote this, things have changed, or at least are about to change. If I were any kind of influential person at Epic, my first task this morning would be to speed up the Fortnite movie. The same applies to any film studio capable of making a blockbuster film of this magnitude. Forget bidding for Split Fiction why are not all these studios trying to get the rights to the Fortnite movie?
Why a Flawed Minecraft Movie Proves a Fortnite Film Could Succeed
I imagine many of you reading this are thinking this is a terrible idea And if you have even accessed it be prepared for angry comments. Sure, the Fortnite movie would be pretty bad, but that's why the Minecraft movie is proof that it should exist. Sorry if I have told any of you this, but the Minecraft movie is pretty bad. I know, I have seen it. I sat with my five-year-old son as he excitedly explained who the various creatures and characters were, and as he nodded his head along with the other kids during the chicken jockey scene.
Minecraft and Fortnite do not complement each other, but Epic Games could learn a lot from Mojang's film debut. The biggest takeaway is to not think too much about the story. The story, and all the needlessly confusing background that comes with it is not the reason Minecraft fans flocked to theaters over the weekend and it is not the reason Fortnite fans will do the same.
Just fill it with quotes and famous faces
A Fortnite movie should only have 90 minutes of references and so if you are really going to like Minecraft, adding some famous faces would really help sell it.
A group of four strangers fall out of a battle bus with no clue where they are, as they slowly realize that to get home they will have to eliminate everyone until they're left alone. Ryan Reynolds is shooting yellow in time and then turning to his team and saying, Those were bananas A credits scene featuring Chris Pratt as Jonesy in Fortnite 2 just looks at the camera and says So, where are we? As the screen goes black. Come on Epic, I'm writing this for you right now.
If Epic wants a Fortnite movie they better get to work on it. With so many projects confirmed, the demand for video game adaptations is starting to grow quite a bit. Video game adaptations are the new superhero movies and it is only a matter of time before the wheels come off. Still Fortnite's success is so huge that even if it doesn't come to fruition until video game adaptations become the norm, and even if it is as critically unappreciated as A Minecraft Movie it will make $1 billion because it has Fortnite's name on it.
