Stormgate Starcraft 2 Spiritual Successor Unveils Major Campaign Overhaul

The Stormgate campaign has been completely redesigned by developer Frost Giant in response to feedback received for StarCraft's spiritual successor.

Frost Giant Studios has finally lifted the curtain on it is Stormgate campaign remaster as this free to play RTS from former StarCraft Warcraft and Diablo developers attempts to turn around a tough launch response. The single player story mode was one of the most criticised aspects of the strategy games early access release with users lamenting its placeholder presentation and weak objectives but it has now been dramatically revamped and given new life.

Real-time strategy games are making a comeback. Tempest Rising feels like a new version of Command & Conquer, and Battle Ace uses StarCraft-style ideas with quicker, shorter matches. Stormgate is a more traditional approach that's more closely aligned with Blizzard's best RTS games, and it delivers a largely perfect experience. Unfortunately it is launch was met with mixed response, as players found its graphics and campaign to be underdeveloped, even though it was an early Access release.

However since then Frost Giant has been working hard to tackle areas people wanted to see fixed. Several graphical upgrades have been released while it is most recent patch makes some major improvements, including better unit pathing and full hotkey and control group customization. What is coming next however is a new look campaign which Frost Giant says has been completely redesigned based on your feedback and our vision.

The video demo looks like a big improvement from the campaign shown at launch. It’s better looking, more cinematic and feels more complete. However Frost Giant says it’s still a work in progress. and the studio is eager to get more feedback as it continues to enhance and improve what's currently there.

One of the missions we get a glimpse of here is a scouting patrol attempting to infiltrate enemy security stations and rescue prisoners. One scene shows protagonist Amara working to download a data core during an assault while another has you taking a large APC as part of a Resistance convoy moving between vaults and attempting to repair sentry posts to bolster the city's defenses along the way.

Frost Giant has confirmed that the updated campaign will be made available with the games next major update Stormgate 0.4.0. One commenter remarked it is atmosphere is exactly how I imagined it in the first trailer while another said As someone who backed the Kickstarter and ran a campaign as soon as it became available I'd say this version looks 1,000 times better than the old version.

Of course there is still a long way to go until the full release. It certainly feels like Stormgate is aiming to come together more substantially now what was probably a very early public launch is slowly becoming something that Starcraft fans like me have been eagerly awaiting.
