Okay stop us if you have heard this one before, but Sony and Naughty Dog are rereleasing The Last of Us. After rereleasing The Last of Us Part 2 on PlayStation 5, a new collection called The Last of Us Complete has been released alongside Part 1, with a physical Collector's Edition launching in July.
This package brings both Part 1 and Part 2 together in one place, making it easier than ever to experience this story. Normally there isn't much information but the phrase complete has fans wondering if this means that The Last of Us Part 3 will no longer happen.
Why Complete is a very strong word
In multiple Reddit threads reiterating the news, fans were openly wondering what the meaning behind calling the bundle a complete collection was.
If they are calling it the (complete) edition So I am not waiting for Part 3 anymore one fan wrote. Not only is it being called a complete collection, but Naughty Dog's own website states The Last of Us Complete makes it easier than ever to experience the entire story on PS5.
This means the story is over another fan said. I really hope it isn't. Another fan posed the same theory, writing This could mean there probably won't be a third volume.
Neil Druckmann has expressed doubts about Part 3 before
If this is the end of The Last of Us story, it wouldn't be too surprising, especially considering Neil Druckmann's own words that have come out recently. Back in March, Druckmann said not to bet on other entries. Specifically, Druckmann said I guess the only thing I would say is don't bet on The Last of Us getting made again. It could happen.
Then a few weeks later, Druckmann once again backtracked on his words. In a separate interview he said There has to be a lot of stars coming together for something else, some other project SoI can't guarantee that.
Perhaps the complete collection of The Last of Us is meant to give fans of the HBO series a centralized location to access the games. But given the fact that this isn't the first time Naughty Dog has spoken openly about a potential ending, it could mean a lot more than that. Am really hope for part 3 never say never one fan wrote.
