The Frostpunk 1886 release brings a revamped version of the original survival and strategy game with a new name engine and gameplay changes.

When is the release date for Frostpunk 1886? Even though Frostpunk 2 is getting a lot of attention 11 Bit hasn't forgotten about the original game from 2018. They are actually rebuilding it from scratch.

The first Frostpunk was made using the Liquid Engine just like 11 Bit's earlier game This War of Mine. But after seven years. the Liquid Engine is no longer being updated. 11 Bit says it needs a new engine to keep the game fresh. So they have rebuilt the original Frostpunk game in Unreal Engine 5 with new features and improvements.

Frostpunk 1886 Release Date Window Revealed

The release window for Frostpunk 1886 is set for 2027. as confirmed by the developer 11 Bit in the New Game Announcement trailer.

Frostpunk 1886 was first mentioned in April 2025 by Przemysław Marszał the president of 11 Bit's management board in a press release for investors. He said As a developer and publisher we want to expand the size and timeline of our projects. This also means taking advantage of profitable opportunities. That's why we have decided to start working on the next project in the Frostpunk universe which we plan to release by 2027.

At the end of April the Frostpunk 1886 announcement trailer was released showing that it’s a remake of the original game. Development started in early 2025. 11 Bit says that after it’s out. Frostpunk 1886 will be updated alongside Frostpunk 2. It’s not clear if 1886 will get updates as often as the sequel. but 11 Bit promises more details soon. We haven't seen much gameplay of Frostpunk 1886 yet. but in April 2025 a short developer video showed a little bit of the work being done with the new engine.

11 Bit has shared what we can expect from Frostpunk 1886. It's not just a better look it's a bigger version of the game with new content, mechanics, events, technologies and buildings. There’s also a new Purpose path. Moving to UE5 will allow mod support and the possibility of DLCs after launch.
