Indiana Jones and the Great Circle The Ultimate Dad Game Experience

It was very Good Friday when I started playing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. It really was a good Friday because I finally got to play the game after waiting for MachineGames to release it on PS5. My parents were visiting for Easter and I was thinking about how to spend the weekend. I might take my dad to see The Amateur but I still had 46 hours to fill. At least one of those hours would be spent playing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

Growing Up with the Joneses A Nostalgic Journey Through Adventure

I grew up watching Indiana Jones movies, like most kids after Raiders of the Lost Ark came out in 1981. The first one I remember seeing was Temple of Doom and it's still my favorite. I enjoy all three of the original movies though. I also like parts of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny. My dad showed me the Indiana Jones movies and his favorite video games are also inspired by them.

He loved playing Myst and Riven when he was younger and Cyan Worlds adventure games are like puzzle sections from Indiana Jones like the Well of Souls or the Grail Temple but in video game form. There's a reason most Indiana Jones games before Great Circle were point-and-click adventures. The main reason is because LucasArts known for making point-and-click games, developed them. The second reason is that Indiana Jones stories are perfect for this type of adventure.

My dad enjoys watching me play the Uncharted games because of their great graphics and adventure story similar to Indiana Jones. Over Christmas I played most of Uncharted 3 again at my parents house, and he was really impressed by how good it looked. Even though it's a 14-year-old game remastered for The Nathan Drake Collection, it still caught his attention. It’s not as realistic as today's games especially since he’s seen me play Uncharted 4. which looks way better. This made me even more excited to show him Indiana Jones and the Great Circle which looks amazing on my PS5.

My dad enjoys the Uncharted games but he gets frustrated when I get stuck in long shootouts like the one in the boat scene. He finds that part boring and wishes there was a version of the game without all the fighting. Indiana Jones is perfect for him because Indy can complete most of the game without shooting anyone. Dad wouldn’t like shooting but hitting a bad guy in the head with a violin might be more his style.

In the end he liked what I showed him but the timing wasn't perfect. I was playing the part of the game before Vatican City So I hadn't gotten to the main puzzles yet. I was excited to show my dad Great Circle like Satipo was eager for Indy to throw him the idol. but I might've shown it too early. Maybe I'll show him the cool underground puzzles I found in Gizeh at Fourth of July.

If only MachineGames would let us play it like a walking simulator…
