The team that brought Minecraft to consoles has launched a new playtest of their ambitious open-world game Reforj on Xbox.
Minecraft 2 Will we ever get? Even though the Minecraft movie is doing well at the box office. it seems unlikely that Microsoft and Mojang will release a full sequel. However 4J Studios known for bringing Minecraft to consoles and handhelds is making a game that could be seen as a successor. It’s called Reforj and it’s their own original version of the game, created with Minecraft YouTuber Joseph Stampy Garrett. You can now sign up to join its new playtest.
Unlike the idea of a successor that Minecraft's creator Markus Notch Persson considered and then abandoned Reforj is a real competitor to Minecraft. It is made with the studio's Elements Engine and begins with the same block-based design. but it soon changes. While the blocks are still visible each part can be reshaped resized or curved allowing for more detailed landscapes and structures.
The new sculpting system really caught my attention it seems like a big step forward for a Minecraft successor. You can also expect the usual open-world exploration and creativity plus 4J hints at uncovering secrets from a lost civilization across different worlds as you go.
Reforged is being developed with a focus on community feedback along with the changes the developer thought Minecraft needed after working on the console port. This game is very different from anything we have done. says Chris van der Kuyl chairman and co-founder of 4J. It's built on new technology we spent four or five years creating and it's a community-driven game. We have an idea of where it's headed. but we won’t know for sure until the community sees it.
The next step is to open Reforj to more players to get feedback on the game. The pre-alpha starts on Wednesday April 30. You can fill out a form now for a chance to be invited to test the game.
