Code Vein 2 builds on Bandai Namco’s anime-style Dark Souls game by adding more fighting partners time travel and a cool golden Tron-style motorbike.
The first Code Vein was like an anime version of Dark Souls but it didn’t keep me interested for long. However after seeing a preview of the surprise sequel, Code Vein 2 at Summer Game Fest I got excited. I also spoke with producer Keita Iizuka who said the team is working on deeper combat more ways to customize your character and even time travel.
In Code Vein 2 you play as a hunter chasing scary corrupted creatures called Revenants that are destroying a broken world. The game has a new story and new characters. To stop these monsters you’ll need more than just fighting skills. You’ll travel between two versions of the world the past and the present and change things in the past to affect the present. You can switch between these timelines whenever you want thanks to the game’s time-travel system.
Both time periods look almost the same as both were hit by an apocalyptic event. However the second one looks more ruined and has a creepy moon in the sky. Still both worlds look beautiful.
Capcom added the rewrite-your-present system because the team was inspired by time-travel stories like the Tokyo Revengers manga and Steins Gate anime. It's not exactly the same but the idea of two worlds reminds me of Lords of the Fallen which has a dark world hidden under the real one.
Code Vein 2 brings back the partner system where a special character fights with you. The first partner shown is Lou who can also travel through time. The developers haven’t said how many partners will be in the game but they promise there will be more than the seven from the first game.
Each partner in the game has their own story and background. So when you complete a big challenge you'll feel more connected to them says Iizuka. He believes this deeper partner system is what will make Code Vein 2 stand out from other top soulslike games.
Even though you fight with companions your character is still the main hero in battles. Code Vein 2 makes the action better with two new weapons and special Formae powers and a deep class and skill system. It also adds powerful Jail moves big dramatic attacks shown with cool animations. These moves are powered by a container on your back that holds your heart. As you defeat enemies and take their blood the meter fills up. When it's full you can do amazing attacks like calling a giant spear made of bats.
You’ll now use a gold futuristic motorbike to travel through open areas between dungeons. It’s a bit surprising to see the Revenant hunter riding something that looks like a Tron bike but it definitely seems more fun than walking.
If you liked the character creator in Code Vein you’ll be happy to know that Code Vein 2 will make it even better. Bandai says the sequel will let you customize your Revenant hunter in more detail than ever before.
I think Code Vein 2 might be the strangest game I saw at Summer Game Fest even more than Crimson Desert. It mixes anime-style characters with Dark Souls-style gameplay and adds crazy stuff like a gold motorbike, flashy Jail moves and time travel. I’m really excited to see how it all fits together.
