These days it feels like every video game follows the same rules. They try to have a deep story a huge open world and take over 50 hours to finish. But often the bigger the game, the less fun it becomes. Dying Light 2 felt like that zombies didn’t seem that important until the Tower Raid part. But Dying Light: The Beast plans to bring back the old survival horror style. The game’s director Tymon SmektaÅ‚a said it will focus more on fighting zombies and less on human drama and politics.

If you haven’t followed the Dying Light games Dying Light: The Beast is a new story set in Castor Woods a place that used to be a tourist spot but is now full of zombies. The main character is Kyle Crane from the first game but this time he’s part human, part zombie. He wants revenge on a villain called The Baron who once captured him. To get it he must fight through zombie hordes defeat the Baron’s army and finally take him down.

Dying Light 2 was set in Villedor a big city based on Europe and full of people and conflicts. But the new place, Castor Woods is far away, spooky and much more dangerous especially at night. That also means fewer people and less fighting between groups. At Summer Game Fest my teammate Jamie asked Smektała if the new game The Beast will have the same political drama or focus more on action.

Dying Light: The Beast focuses more on zombies he says. There are still some survivors and groups but they’re smaller and not seen much in the open world. Most of the time you’ll be dealing with zombies and scary creatures made by the Baron. You also fight the Baron's private army. At first Kyle doesn’t want to talk to other people because he’s focused on revenge. But when night falls he understands he needs others to help fight back and grow stronger against the Baron.

SmektaÅ‚a says the game will be very hard so hard that you can die easily. He laughs and explains that even on normal difficulty Dying Light: The Beast is made so you have to think smart to stay alive. It’s not just about hitting zombies you need to use your brain and all the tools the game gives you both deadly and non-deadly. You have many options but none of them are too powerful so you must plan carefully how to use them to survive and reach your goals.

He says the game gets harder at higher levels. Zombies do more damage have more health and also act differently. They get smarter and work together better. The team is also thinking about adding a permadeath mode (where if you die it's permanent), but that might come after the game launches.

The release date for Dying Light: The Beast was announced at Summer Game Fest and luckily it's coming very soon. If you want to warm up try some of the best parkour games. Or if you need to get ready for the scary journey to Castor Woods check out our list of the best horror games.
