If you want to see if a game will stay popular for a long time check its speedrunning community. A strong group of players who enjoy racing through the game fast shows that the game will be remembered. Big game series like Mario, Dark Souls and Metroid have lasted because they are great for speedrunning and have many fans.
It didn’t take long for me to see that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is great for many different challenges. It’s no surprise that people have already done amazing speedruns with it. Even though it wasn’t shown at this summer’s Games Done Quick I think Expedition 33 will become popular with serious gamers. I’m excited to see what they do next.
Play Fast and Don’t Die Mastering Speed and Survival in Expedition 33
Most games can be played fast and Expedition 33 is one of them. You can already see some fast play videos on YouTube. The game’s official speedrun scores only start after two weeks. One player Oh Snap did an amazing run in 1 hour and 58 minutes. It took me 32 hours to do the same thing. They also beat the last boss quickly with a special character setup that I didn’t know about.
This is just the beginning. When the leaderboard opens people will get faster and faster until Expedition 33 is as good as it can be. But because critical hit damage is random it might take a long time for the leaderboard to stay steady.
Expedition 33 speedruns are fun but many other games have amazing speedruns too. What I really like about this game is how hard it can be. Like Dark Souls, Expedition 33 is a game where fans can make crazy challenges. Soon people will do some really impressive things in this game.
Making a Hard Game Even Harder And Loving It
People are already making their own hard challenges for Expedition 33. These challenges are just what you would expect. For example someone is fighting the toughest secret boss using only one character Verso and they don’t get hit at all they only block attacks perfectly. Using rules like small teams no getting hit and only blocking can make many different challenge runs. If you also add rules like using low-level characters players will do some amazing things in this game.
And that’s just the usual stuff. People will probably try even crazier things like using dance pads to block attacks or playing the whole game with bananas as controllers. All those fun weird Dark Souls challenges could work in Expedition 33 too even though it’s a totally different game. If you’re a streamer or YouTuber who likes challenge runs Expedition 33 might be a great pick for your next video.
The coolest challenges will be the most creative ones. It's fine to copy the tough style of Dark Souls at first but the players who invent totally new ideas for Expedition 33 will stand out the most. Imagine someone using motion capture to dodge attacks in real life or playing each character with a different weird controller. Maybe there could even be a run where you only use each picto skill or weapon one time. I don’t know what wild ideas people will come up with but I’m truly sure they’ll help keep Expedition 33 exciting for a long time.
