007 First Light tries to respect the classic James Bond style but will also focus on parts that older simpler 007 games didn’t explore much.

Even though we knew 007 First Light would tell the story of a young James Bond seeing his younger version was still surprising. I was interested to see how this new Bond would be different from the older ones we know from movies. After watching IO Interactive’s showcase at Summer Game Fest in Hollywood, I talked to the game’s cinematic and narrative director Martin Emborg. We discussed the younger Bond the villains the gadgets and how First Light is different from older 007 games and even the Hitman series.

The trailer for 007 First Light shows many things you’d expect from a James Bond story fast Aston Martin cars a motorbike with fire coming out the back and a hero who doesn’t always follow the rules. This version of Bond is younger and still learning some spy skills but he already has the classic Bond charm and humor. According to Emborg he’s someone who can talk his way in and out of trouble and is very charming which is a big part of how he’s shown in the game.

The books and movies often show that Bond is very clever and quick-thinking. But Emborg thinks many old 007 games forgot to include this part of his character.

I think the earlier games were a bit boring and simple. They didn’t show the important part of James Bond how he solves problems in surprising ways. Emborg says Bond often uses gadgets in ways that Q didn’t expect and many times he even breaks them.

The new James Bond movie will still have all the usual things we expect. But the creators want to try some new ideas too. Bond is a perfect hero who can do almost anything. He can charm anyone drive or fly any vehicle and fight the toughest enemies. We even know how he likes his drinks. While this makes him fun to watch or read about it can also make him hard to relate to for some people.

When we first meet [Our Bond] in First Light he doesn’t know any of those things yet. It’s interesting to follow his journey and see how he changes emotionally. At the start he’s not as cold as he will become later. People will go through an emotional journey with him.

A Bond story always needs a villain. IO isn’t telling us who the bad guy is in First Light yet but I’m trying to get some clues from Emborg.

He says with a smile Having a good villain is very important for a good Bond story. We took our time and worked hard to create a great villain. That’s all I can say. You can see a little hint of it in the trailer.

Before the new 007 game was announced I noticed it was a lot like the Hitman stealth games. The sneaky gameplay and third-person fighting are still there but this game is not just a copy of Hitman. It has its own style and is different.

Hitman is about death coming to someone. You can tell this story as a funny one or a sad one. You can change the story and play it mostly how you want. Agent 47 is like a blank slate but James Bond needs more story and character to keep the action going.

Emborg says it has to be about him and what he is going through and needs to do. They want to keep some of the style from IO by giving you creative control and choices on how to do things but not as much as in Hitman.

Emborg says that Hitman needs players to be patient while 007 is more about acting quickly. From what we saw in the trailer and these comments 007 First Light will probably be a mix of both styles between Hitman’s slow approach and the fast action of games like Uncharted. It’s good to see that IO is still focusing on what they do best.

The game 007 First Light will come out next year and we still don’t know everything about it. But the early information about how IO will show Bond’s origin story is interesting. Bond looks younger than usual which might feel strange at first but it’s exciting to see a new side of him. I hope IO can mix the emotional story and action well. If there is too much of one and not enough of the other the game might become boring like some past games.
