A Short Hike was a small indie game that became very popular because it was short emotional and relaxing like a real walk in nature. Now the same developer Adam Gryu has shared a look at one of his canceled games. It was going to be a cute and colorful RPG inspired by Paper Mario and was called Untitled Paper RPG.

So why isn’t this game coming out? Adam explained in a blog post that he started working on it in 2016 when he was feeling nostalgic about the old Paper Mario games. These games are still loved today and even inspired new games like Clair Obscur Expedition 33. But Adam began making the game without a full plan. He focused on building characters and gameplay systems but didn’t have a clear story in mind. Because of this the project became too big and hard to manage.

He may return to it one day but for now he’s working on other games. These include a 3D action-adventure game an RPG with claymation-style graphics and a platformer roguelike.

Untitled Paper RPG may not be finished but it still stands out. The game looks beautiful combining the fun cutout style of Paper Mario with bright crayon-like colors. The battles are fun and full of energy. Even though the full game might never be released you can still enjoy this version for free. It takes about two hours to play.

You can download and play it for free right now from its itch.io page.
