I always use the suburb in Muldraugh between Cortman Medical and the trailer park for my base. It’s just south of the gas station and the church. I don’t pick it because the houses have two floors or because I find working cars there. I choose it because there are very few zombies there. In Project Zomboid being alone is safer. But I also like the game to be unpredictable. Not knowing what will happen next makes the game exciting. That’s why the new update for Project Zomboid unstable build 42 is great.

Project Zomboid build 42 added many new things like taking care of animals better physics, new lighting and basements. This made the game bigger and more interesting. But if you have played a lot you might see the same groups of zombies in the same places when you start a new game. The new update changes how zombies appear so the game feels more different and exciting each time.

The Indie Stone calls it the Zed Spawn Heat Map system. The game map is split into small parts called tiles. Each tile has a name like military base for tiles near a military base. After the new update zombies will appear differently depending on the type of tile.

There are two things that matter: how far the zombies spread and how many zombies appear. At the military base which usually has a lot of people there are more zombies and they spread over a bigger area around the base. But the way this happens is not always the same or easy to guess.

The system uses a special kind of random noise to change where zombies appear. This helps stop zombies from always showing up in the same places like near a military base. There are two layers of this noise: one for small areas like houses and one for bigger areas like streets. So sometimes a busy building might have few or no zombies and sometimes a whole street might have none at all.

Map tiles have rules for where zombies appear but these are changed and mixed up by your map’s unique code. So the same place usually won’t have the same number or spread of zombies each time.

The new unstable build 42 update adds some changes to where players appear and the maps. It also adds ragdoll animations when things explode and new sounds so you can tell if a zombie is hitting wood or your door. One tricky change is that if a car alarm goes off you can’t stop it by quitting and reloading the game anymore. Even if you leave and come back the alarm will keep ringing.
