The new Rimworld Odyssey DLC is going to change how the game’s maps look and feel. In this expansion you can now build your own gravship. This special ship lets you travel to new areas on the planet and even go beyond the sky to explore nearby satellites and asteroids. The DLC also brings five new types of environments or biomes each with new animals that you can tame trade or even eat if needed.

In a new blog post the developers at Ludeon Studios shared how they are changing the way maps are made so every new place you visit feels fresh and different. To make sure each trip is interesting they’ve added over 85 special map features. These are little touches that make each area stand out. Some of these features only appear in certain regions while others can show up anywhere by surprise. This update adds a lot of variety to the game and helps keep the experience exciting every time you play.

The easiest example to understand is rivers. Now rivers come in many different shapes and sizes. Their look depends on where they are on the big world map. You might see rivers joining together rivers that flow into the ocean and even rivers that split up and go around islands. Odyssey also makes things more interesting by mixing different biomes together on one map. That means you’ll see a mix of different lands, plants and animals all in one place.

Some of these are brand-new Odyssey biomes. One is called the Glowforest. In this biome the air is full of sulfur so the sunlight can’t get through. That means you can’t grow normal crops but you will see glowing mushrooms instead. Another biome is the Lava Fields. It’s a dangerous place to build because the land is shaky and hot rocks can fall at any time. But if you can stay alive you’ll find rare metals and good soil that helps crops grow really well.

The Scarlands used to be a big busy city but it was destroyed by powerful weapons. Now it’s a dangerous and broken place. The water there is not safe to drink, the rain is harmful and strange sicknesses have spread to the wild animals. The game’s creator Ludeon says it’s a scary place. I’d avoid it if I were you. But if you’re brave enough to explore it and deal with the old defense systems still working there you might find some useful items hidden in the wreckage.

Another tough place is the Glacial Plains. It’s super cold food is hard to find and the weather is always harsh. There are giant, ancient animals like mastodons and scimitar cats walking around. The most interesting thing here is a frozen ruin from a forgotten time. Inside it there are strange sleep pods that still seem to be alive. If that place feels too creepy you can try the Grasslands instead. It’s full of green fields and good soil for farming. But don’t relax too much droughts and wildfires can quickly ruin everything. If you handle those well the Grasslands could be the perfect place for you.

In Rimworld Odyssey, the weather and land can change and affect your colony in many ways. When it gets really cold ice can cover lakes and rivers. If there is heavy rain the land can flood which might ruin your crops and make life hard for your people. But that’s just the beginning. You’ll also have to deal with sandstorms, toxic rain, strong winds, snowstorms and thick fog that makes it hard to see. All of these things make the game more challenging. But facing these tough conditions is a big part of what makes Rimworld fun.

There is no release date for Rimworld Odyssey yet but the creators say they will share more updates soon. Next they will talk about the gravship and how space travel will work in the game.
