Splitgate 2 Devs Respond to Backlash Over Expensive Launch Microtransactions

Splitgate 2 is a free-to-play shooting game. Some players like it but many gave mixed reviews on Steam. They don't like that the in-game purchases cost too much. Also players are not happy with the new battle royale mode.

The new multiplayer shooter game Splitgate 2 is getting bad reviews from players because it has expensive in-game purchases. The game is fast and uses portals to move quickly around the maps. It officially launched during the Summer Game Fest but many players don’t like the new battle royale mode and the high prices for cosmetic items. This happened after Ian Proulx one of the game makers said he was tired of playing the same Call of Duty every year.

I really like Splitgate 2. I loved the first game and playing the new one has been great so far. It’s faster than games like Halo and lets you move more than in Call of Duty which I enjoy. They added a battle royale mode but I’m not interested in that. Still it can bring more players to the game. Before the battle royale was announced the company gave hints that made some players expect something bigger So some felt a bit disappointed when it was just a battle royale.

Proulx wore a hat that said Make FPS Great Again during his SGF presentation and some people didn’t like it. Later he said on social media that the hat wasn’t meant to be political and it should be taken just as it says. But many people on the Splitgate Reddit thought the hat was a bad choice and called it cringe as hell.

Some players are upset about the new way the game asks for money called microtransactions. The most expensive one is the Nano Swarm bundle. It costs 8,000 Splitcoins. The game says this price is 45% off from the original price of 14,550 Splitcoins. To help understand, buying 11,500 Splitcoins costs about $100 or £80 right now. So the discounted price of 8,000 Splitcoins is about $70. Many players feel this is too expensive and are unhappy with it.

Someone on X said You criticized Call of Duty on stage but you copied Warzone’s gameplay for your battle royale and sold an $80 bundle in Splitgate 2. The official Splitgate account replied We hear your concerns. This pack has our most special skins with detailed animations and art. We also have cheaper options. They added Making money from the game can be controversial but buying is optional.

Not everything is bad some people on the subreddit say they like the new mode. Like I said before I probably won’t play it much but I’m excited to try the other parts of the game again. Right now the game has a mixed review score of 66% on Steam. It seems like the makers 1047 need to think about how they talk to players and what to do next. I hope they figure it out because the game is really fun.

Update: In a new video shared on social media Proulx talks about the feedback and says they will change the prices. He says Just saying something doesn’t help if you don’t do anything. The price of the Nano Swarm bundle will be cut in half from now on and some other store prices will be lower too. People who already bought the pack will get refunds in Splitcoin. We will keep watching the situation but this is what we are doing today.

Proulx talks about adding the battle royale mode. He says they didn’t just copy or follow a trend. Five years ago he decided not to make a battle royale unless they could add something new. He thinks they did. The mode stays true to Splitgate with respawns and powerful weapons like in arena shooters but better. They believe they made something new and different.
