The Stellar Blade PC port is very popular. Many players are playing Shift Up’s sci-fi action game on Steam. It has more players than any other single-player PlayStation game on Steam. Over 16,000 people gave it a review and 94% of them liked it. Even though the game is doing well the CEO of Shift Up said the story could be better.

In our Stellar Blade PC review Reid says the story is often the weakest part. He thinks the story is okay but nothing special. However the exciting fights make it one of the best action games on PC.

Shift Up CEO and Stellar Blade director Kim Hyung-Tae knows about the criticism. In a new interview with a Korean site called This Is Game he explained why the story ended up that way. The interview was translated using DeepL and checked with Google Translate.

First I want to thank everyone who liked the PC version. We finished the main gameplay early but making the cutscenes took the most time Hyung-Tae said in an interview (from MP1st). In an action game with a story, cutscenes are very important to show the story. You can’t tell the whole story just by action so cutscenes are needed. At first we had many ideas and plans for the cutscenes.

At first we wanted to add many detailed story parts like why the main character changes clothes. But as we worked on the game making cutscenes became too expensive. So to save time and money we had to cut some cutscenes that helped explain the world and characters outside the main story. This is how we managed to finish the game. One reason is that Korea doesn’t yet have enough skilled people or a good system for making story-focused games.

The story was weak before and I'm careful about changing it now with Stellar Blade because it might not fit what players already know. But if we get to make the next game I believe we can create a much better and deeper story.

Shift Up might get a chance to make a sequel to Stellar Blade. The team talked about this new game in a recent company presentation.
