Why Every Survival Game Doesn’t Need to Be the Next Valheim

Lots of new survival games are called the next Valheim but do fans really want that? I don’t think so at least I don’t.
Why Every Survival Game Doesn’t Need to Be the Next Valheim
Valheim is a co-op survival game made by a small team called Iron Gate. It became really popular in 2021 during the time of the global pandemic. Many people were stuck at home and feeling a bit lonely so they turned to video games to feel connected and have fun with friends. Valheim arrived at the perfect time. It gave players a mix of fun challenge and adventure. You start the game in a Viking afterlife world called Valheim in a peaceful place known as The Meadows. Even though it’s one of the safer areas surviving your first day still feels scary and exciting. But soon you realize just how big and full of possibilities this world is. The game also looked beautiful and even today many players remember the silver birch trees from it.

Valheim is full of charm. You'll meet huge blue trolls and annoying little creatures called greylings that throw rocks at you while you're trying to work. No matter what kind of survival game you like Valheim has something for everyone. You can stay at your base and build amazing Viking halls grow your own farm or even raise boars that follow you around. If you prefer fighting you can make powerful weapons and go battle skeletons and other enemies. The world in Valheim is randomly generated so exploring it always brings new surprises and sometimes danger. You might walk into the wrong area too early and get defeated but that’s part of the fun.

There’s always a bit of risk in Valheim. You can lose your gear if you die and it can be hard to get it back. The first time you hear a wolf howling in the snowy mountains you’ll feel nervous. Is something hiding nearby? Then when you finally build a boat and set off on the sea you feel proud until a huge sea monster suddenly appears and attacks That’s the kind of thrill Valheim gives you.

Valheim is a fun and charming game with lots to do. You’ll see big blue trolls and little creatures called greylings that throw rocks at you while you're busy building or farming. No matter what kind of survival game you enjoy Valheim has something for everyone. You can stay at home and build cool Viking houses take care of your farm or raise friendly boars. If you like action you can craft strong weapons and fight enemies like skeletons and more.

The world is randomly made each time so exploring always feels fresh and exciting. Sometimes you might end up in a dangerous area too soon and get defeated but that’s part of the fun. There’s always a bit of risk like losing your gear and trying to get it back or hearing a wolf howling and wondering if it’s nearby. You might even build a boat and sail off only to be surprised when a giant sea monster suddenly attacks.

Valheim gives you a strong feeling of adventure especially when you face its big bosses. Each boss is different and lives in its own special area so you need to get ready with the right items and weapons before you fight them. These bosses also help move the game forward because after you beat them you unlock better materials that help you make stronger gear.

I could talk about Valheim for hours because it’s such a great game. It’s become a benchmark for what a good survival game should be. After Valheim became popular many new survival games started appearing. Some tried to copy it while others took a different path but still followed its ideas. You can tell that Valheim was inspired by other games too like Zelda. But now it feels like many new games try to sell themselves as the next Valheim or a mix of Valheim and another hit game but they rarely live up to that promise. This makes me think about all the survival games I enjoy and why I love them. I don’t want the next big survival game to just copy Valheim. I want it to be something completely new and exciting.

I recently started playing 7 Days to Die and somehow avoided all spoilers for 12 years I don’t even know how When the first Blood Moon arrived it was one of the scariest things I’ve ever experienced in a game. My group had no idea what was coming how to get ready or what the Blood Moon even meant. But just like the game’s name hints you get seven days before something really bad happens.

When that night came we were hiding in a rough shelter we built ourselves. There were spikes and mines on the ground and we had our guns ready aimed at the hills under a strange pink sky. We could hear zombies screaming in the distance and soon they were everywhere. It reminded me of the first time I met a cannibal in The Forest right after the plane crash or when I suddenly died in Don’t Starve Together after spending so long trying to survive. These games are tough and just because you’ve lasted a while doesn’t mean you’re safe.

Some survival games are more relaxing like Raft. In this game you start on a small wooden plank floating in the ocean. You catch floating junk to slowly build your raft bigger and better. Over time, you can add things like sails steering tools and farms. Eventually you’re sailing between islands and discovering new places. The game has a bright cartoon-like look kind of like Valheim or even Palworld.

Another popular game is Runescape: Dragonwilds from Jagex. It focuses more on magic giving the survival genre a magical twist. But honestly it felt very familiar like something I’ve played before. Even though I built a nice-looking house the game didn’t give me much reason to keep playing.

There are many different types of survival games. V Rising is one of my favorites you play as a vampire and have to run from shade to shade so you don’t burn in the sun. Then there are single-player games like The Long Dark where I’ve spent hours walking through cold snowy places all alone. Most survival games try to do something new. Some add scary parts while others are more calm and creative. Even games like Enshrouded which I didn’t enjoy much overall had the best base-building I’ve ever seen in a survival game.

When I first played a survival game like Valheim it felt like anything could happen there were so many new and exciting possibilities. But now even though survival games can go in many different directions most of them feel the same. Many people still compare new survival games to Valheim. I just want the next survival game I play to feel different. I don’t mind starting by picking up a rock and a stick to make an axe that’s a fun part. But the best survival games I’ve played always gave me a feeling of mystery of not knowing what’s coming next. That’s what makes them special.
