Victoria 3 came out in 2022 and had a bit of a rough start. Many players didn’t like it as much as the older game in the series. But things are starting to improve. The newest expansion pass and DLCs like Sphere of Influence and Colossus of the South have gotten good feedback. With Civilization 7 facing its own problems and Europa Universalis 5 coming soon the new update for Victoria 3 (version 1.9) might be a big turning point. It even includes an important new feature that many people haven’t noticed yet.

Paradox has shared details in developer diaries about the upcoming Victoria 3 update which comes out on Tuesday, June 17. This update (version 1.9) will improve the military system with new commander actions like blockading and changes to how strategic goals work. There's also another new feature that hasn’t gotten much attention yet but it could really change how you play the game.

Paradox is adding a new feature that lets players use custom seeds for random number generation (RNG). A custom seed is a code you enter before starting a game to make sure some things always happen the same way. For example in Minecraft you can use a seed to always get a map with lots of diamonds in the same places. In Project Zomboid using a seed might make sure the same enemies show up in certain areas or the same items appear in the same buildings every time you play.

Victoria 3 is a complex strategy game with many possibilities. But with the new 1.9 update you can control some of the randomness. Paradox says you can now set a custom random seed which means the game's random events will follow the pattern you choose. This is helpful for modders or if you don’t like the random traits some characters get like a Japanese leader with an unwanted ideology.

Paradox showed a screenshot of the RNG (random number generator) menu. It says you can set a specific seed so that most random events follow the same pattern. This means if you use the same seed games with no player input will have the same results each time you play.

It looks like seeds in the game help create the same starting setup every time like the same leaders or resources. This can be useful for replaying games with the same beginning or for games where you just watch without playing. But after the game starts your choices and actions still change what happens so not everything is controlled by the seed.

This idea is very interesting. Maybe the game could use a seed that exactly copies real historical events. Players might also be able to make and share their own custom scenarios where things are really hard from the start and you have to plan carefully to survive. We’ll find out more when the Victoria 3 update 1.9 comes out.
