XDefiant was a game that had a hard time from the start. Even though the team who made it had a lot of experience and worked on big games like Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed it didn’t do very well. Ubisoft the company behind it had been releasing games that didn’t sell well recently. The live service game market is very tough because players want new content all the time. XDefiant also had to compete with a very popular new Call of Duty game. Because of all this it was not surprising that XDefiant shut down after about a year. But that doesn’t mean it was a bad game. It wasn’t perfect but I had fun playing it for a few months and it reminded me of the good old days of Call of Duty.

I like Black Ops 6 now but before that Call of Duty was a bit boring to me. At least that's what I think. Modern Warfare 2 was good and Modern Warfare 3 was a little better but still similar. It made me miss the best times of the game series. XDefiant seemed like that kind of game. It has smaller, classic three-lane maps, smooth shooting, a better way to pick your gear and special class abilities to learn. Sounds great.

XDefiant had some strange and frustrating problems before it was released. It finally came out in May last year just when people were losing interest in Modern Warfare 3. Even though the game had some issues especially with hit detection I quickly got hooked and enjoyed playing it even though many people had already given up on it.

Season 1 was really fun even though there were some technical problems. I knew I couldn’t spend so much time on it especially with a new Call of Duty coming and other games like Destiny 2, Apex Legends and The Finals trying to get my attention. But I think I will keep playing it sometimes in the future.

At the end of 2024 things started to go wrong. Black Ops 6 brought new energy to Call of Duty and XDefiant still had problems. Many players including me began to lose interest. The game’s team felt a lot of pressure. In October after Season 2 began reports said XDefiant only had two seasons left to improve or it might be canceled. Actually it had even less time than that.

In December Ubisoft said it would stop supporting XDefiant. On that day the game was removed from stores. But people who already downloaded it could keep playing for six more months. The last season had a lot of new content that was meant for future updates.

Today, June 2 was the last full day to play XDefiant before it shuts down on June 3. I played a few games before writing this. I thought I would feel nostalgic and ready to say goodbye. But I just felt sad. Even though I hadn’t played for months I quickly got used to the game again because it’s easy to play compared to other shooting games. It felt smooth and fun. It felt lively even though the game was about to end.

I don’t have player numbers So I don’t know if many players like me came back to play XDefiant one last time. But I found games quickly and saw lots of goodbye messages online. Some people think XDefiant was another failed Ubisoft game and I get why they think that. But even with its problems it did many things well and should have lasted longer. For me it wasn’t going to beat big games like Call of Duty but it showed them how to have fun and use old ideas in a good way.

XDefiant is ending. We will miss it even if it was new. If you liked playing XDefiant or not there are many other free PC games and multiplayer games to play instead.
