Bioware has said it will turn off Anthem’s servers in about five months which means the game will no longer be playable at all.
Anthem is known as one of the most disappointing live service games ever released. Bioware a studio famous for its great single-player story games decided to try something new by making a co-op shooter. But things didn’t go as planned. Even though some players liked Anthem it didn’t meet expectations. Soon after launch Bioware and EA gave up on improving it and stopped adding new content. Since 2021 the game has been stuck in limbo you could still play it but nothing new was being added. Now Bioware has confirmed that Anthem’s servers will fully shut down in January 2026 which means the game will no longer be playable at all.
Anthem did have some good parts. The graphics were beautiful the world had cool events and flying around in the exosuits felt really fun. But the game had a lot of problems too. The story wasn’t strong enough which upset longtime Bioware fans. The missions felt repetitive and the gameplay didn’t have the same depth as other games like Destiny 2. About a year after launch the developers said they were going to completely rebuild the game. But that never happened. After that it was clear Anthem would never become one of the best co-op games out there.
For the past few years Anthem has still been available to buy and play. Some fans who liked it early on could return to it now and then just for fun. Others who found it on sale for a cheap price could try it out and judge for themselves whether it deserved all the hate. But soon that won’t be possible anymore. With the servers shutting down Anthem will be gone for good.
Bioware has announced that Anthem’s online servers will be permanently shut down on Monday January 12, 2026. Since the game was designed to always be played online it needs an internet connection to work. This means that once the servers go offline there will be no way to play the game at all not even alone or offline. After that date Anthem will be completely unplayable.
For now you can still play the game online for a little over 180 days. However starting today you can no longer buy any in-game premium currency. If you already have some in your account you can still use it until the shutdown happens. Bioware thanked players for their support over the years and said they truly appreciate the passion and dedication fans have shown.
The studio also confirmed that Anthem will be removed from the EA Play subscription service on Friday August 15, 2025. That also means it will no longer be available through PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate since those services include EA Play.
To be honest it’s a bit surprising that the servers were left running this long especially since Bioware stopped releasing new content for Anthem over four years ago. But now in about five months the game will reach its true end and disappear for good.
