Battlefield 6’s amazing multiplayer shows exactly why we need this popular series to come back. It reminds us how fun and exciting first-person shooter games can be when done right.
The road in front of me is full of broken pieces of buildings and rubble. I’m almost out of bullets and the only thing keeping me safe is a burned-out tank. In most shooter games this situation would mean I’m finished. But after playing Battlefield 6 for five full hours I can say it’s not just another average shooter. Even though I only got to try a small part of the multiplayer mode it already felt exciting fast-paced and well-made. Battlefield 6 feels like the developers have really listened to feedback and made something that brings back the fun and quality the series used to be known for.
Now let’s talk about the previous game Battlefield 2042. It wasn’t a terrible game but it had many problems when it first launched. Over time it got better and became more enjoyable but it never truly felt like it knew what kind of game it wanted to be. Meanwhile other shooters are changing in strange ways like Call of Duty adding silly character skins such as Beavis and Butthead. Some new and more serious shooters like The Finals had great ideas but didn’t get the long-term support or love they deserved. That’s where Battlefield has a chance to shine again. A lot of gamers are now looking for more realistic and serious military-style FPS games like Escape from Tarkov Grey Zone Warfare or Ready or Not. These kinds of games show that players want something that feels more grounded and intense. Battlefield 6 seems like it’s going to give players exactly that.
I got to travel to Los Angeles this week to play Battlefield 6 early and speak with some of the main people working on the game. The version I played had two main modes Breakthrough and Conquest. There are more modes coming too like Rush and a brand-new one called Escalation. Escalation is like a more intense version of Conquest. All of these modes will be available when the game officially comes out on October 10. A fan-favorite mode from Battlefield 4 called Squad Deathmatch is also coming back. However the huge 128-player battles (64 vs. 64) are not part of this game at least not yet.
Battlefield 2042 had a near-future setting but that idea is now completely gone. Battlefield 6 takes a big step back and feels much more like the older Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 games that fans loved. It even has a little bit of the vibe from Battlefield Hardline. The maps in Battlefield 6 are set in intense war-torn locations. You’ll be fighting in the destroyed streets of Brooklyn climbing over the bombed-out mountains of Tajikistan and running through the broken-down markets of Cairo. Everywhere you go it feels like the game is telling you This is real, gritty warfare. It doesn’t feel clean or futuristic anymore it feels dirty dangerous and chaotic, just like a full-scale war.
One map called Liberation Peak is especially exciting. You push through empty farmhouses and temporary military camps while the action never stops. It gives you a huge rush of excitement. This map feels like it came straight out of Battlefield’s best years but it still feels new at the same time. It reminds players of famous old maps like Atacama Desert from Battlefield Bad Company 2 and St. Quentin Scar from Battlefield 1. These maps were large full of action and gave you space to use tactics and strategy. Liberation Peak does the same. You can take a Humvee and go off the main roads and just driving around feels super fun. The sound effects like engines roaring bullets flying and buildings crumbling are so real and powerful that they make you feel like you’re in the middle of it all.
But having a good-looking game with amazing sounds is only part of what makes Battlefield work. The most important thing is how the game actually plays. This is where things could go wrong or go very right. One of the big changes that many players noticed in Battlefield 2042 was the open class system. That’s coming back in a different way in Battlefield 6. Some people didn’t like how 2042 let you mix everything up because it made each class feel less important. But in Battlefield 6 it feels better. The game actually encourages you to pick a class and stick to your role in the team.
For example I personally like using assault rifles and long-range guns most of the time. I also like to play as the Support class where I get to use the defibrillator to revive teammates. Bringing people back to life in the middle of a fight feels amazing.
The best part is that this system doesn’t make the classes feel confusing or useless like in 2042. In Battlefield 6 the class system feels important again. You feel like your role really matters to your team. Whether you're healing providing ammo scouting or attacking the game wants you to focus on the objective. That classic Battlefield feeling the one where your squad works together and everyone has a job to do is back and stronger than it’s been in years.
When you start customizing your weapons in Battlefield there are a lot of things you can try. The main focus is on attachments these are extra parts you add to your gun to change how it works. Each attachment uses up a certain number of points and you only get 100 points in total to spend. Because of this you can’t just make an overpowered super weapon that ruins the game for everyone else. At least not right now. Instead I had to think carefully about every single attachment I used. Picking the right setup was actually a fun challenge.
Every battle feels different so you can’t always use the same weapon setup. You have to think ahead based on the type of match and the map you’re playing on. For example a strong assault rifle is helpful in many situations but it might not be quick enough to win in close combat. So I started thinking can I fix that by using attachments that make my gun faster? Yes but then I also have to make sure the rest of my gear still works well together.
Each class in the game has its own special weapons and gadgets and they’re designed to work together. That’s the true spirit of Battlefield. For example I might give my Support class a big machine gun but I still need to move fast so I can help teammates by reviving them. So I have to find the right balance between power and speed. That’s what makes building your loadout so interesting.
EA has completely changed how fighting and shooting works in Battlefield 6. They have reworked everything from how the guns behave to how recoil feels when you shoot. Compared to Battlefield 2042 the new game feels much better and more responsive. Some guns now feel faster and sharper while heavier weapons feel powerful and slow to move just like you would expect in real life. You can really feel the weight of the big guns when you’re running around with them. Also the time it takes to kill someone feels very much like the classic Battlefield games. When I got hit by sniper bullets I knew right away I was done for. The game even shows a strong hit effect on the screen to let you know that you’ve been taken out and a revive won’t save you this time.
Of course no Battlefield game is complete without things getting destroyed. Big explosions broken buildings and chaos everywhere that’s what fans love. In Battlefield 6 EA is focusing on something new called Tactical Destruction. But honestly I have mixed feelings about it. When I think about destruction in Battlefield I remember amazing moments like the skyscraper falling in the Siege of Shanghai map or the chaos in Downtown Los Angeles from Battlefield Hardline. Those big moments were called Levolution events and they were epic. But in Battlefield 6 at least in the maps and modes I’ve tried that kind of massive destruction seems to be missing. During the preview event the developers barely even mentioned Levolution which was surprising.
In Battlefield 2042 they moved away from big destruction and added weather effects like tornados and sandstorms. Those were cool to look at but I really miss the feeling of buildings collapsing and maps changing shape completely. In Battlefield 6 Tactical Destruction gives us a little bit of that but it’s more controlled. You can destroy a lot of buildings and parts of the environment like breaking into apartments or smashing shop fronts in Cairo or destroying old homes on the Liberation Peak map. If you want to surprise your enemies you can even destroy a floor or use a sledgehammer to make your own path. It gives you new ways to fight but it’s not as wild and dramatic as before.
Watching a building break down and turn into rubble in Battlefield 6 looks very cool and feels like something out of a movie. It’s especially exciting when you’re hiding inside while bullets and bombs are flying everywhere. But I’m a bit worried that this excitement might not last forever. I was hoping Battlefield 6 would have even more destruction like in the game The Finals. A lot of the people who made The Finals used to work on Battlefield so I thought they would bring the same level of chaos and destruction. I’ve played The Finals for over 500 hours and it never feels boring because the maps can change so much during each match. In that game even the map becomes a weapon.
In Battlefield 6 you can destroy things but not completely freely. The game still has some limits and EA doesn’t let you break everything. Also there are no huge dramatic events like the Levolution moments in older Battlefield games. For example there’s a map called Empire State which is based on New York City from Battlefield Hardline. It feels like it should have some huge crazy destruction event but right now it doesn’t. I really hope I’m wrong and the full game will surprise us, but at the moment it’s not giving that same over-the-top explosive feeling that older Battlefield games were known for.
There’s also a rumor that Battlefield 6 might have a new battle royale mode. Hopefully it’s better than Firestorm which didn’t do very well. But that’s something to talk about later.
Still Battlefield 6 is showing us why we need the Battlefield series. It already runs much better than Battlefield 2042 which had lots of problems when it launched. If this keeps up then the upcoming beta for Battlefield 6 could be great. The early access beta starts on August 7 and everyone else can play from August 9. All the classic Battlefield features are back too there’s the powerful music amazing sound effects and gunshots that sound super realistic and give you chills.
For now even though we don’t have big Levolution moments yet Battlefield 6 already feels like a strong and exciting first-person shooter. It has a real chance to make the Battlefield series great again and remind everyone why it used to be one of the best shooter games out there.
