Star Citizens single player game Squadron 42 will not be shown at Citizencon Direct 2025 but CIG says there is no need to worry.
Squadron 42 will not be shown at the upcoming Citizencon Direct event. The developer Cloud Imperium Games has explained that fans should not panic about this news. Squadron 42 is the long awaited single player campaign connected to the massive space game Star Citizen. The studio is still targeting a release in the year 2026.
Recently Jared Huckaby who is also known as Disco Lando and is the content director at Cloud Imperium Games confirmed that Squadron 42 will not appear at the October showcase. This statement made many fans feel worried because they thought it meant there could be another delay. The community reaction quickly spread as people feared the game might not be on track.
Huckaby responded to these concerns. He explained that the team working on Squadron 42 is very focused and completely dedicated to reaching the 2026 launch goal. He mentioned that the team is heads down which means they are working very hard without distractions. Cloud Imperium CEO Chris Roberts had already said in last year’s showcase that the target was 2026 and that goal has not changed.
Huckaby spoke during a livestream and gave more detail. He said that the reason Squadron 42 will not appear at Citizencon is because the team cannot afford to lose time. Preparing content for a public showcase would take away focus from development. That is why there will be no reveal no gameplay and no announcement connected to Squadron 42 at this year’s event. Instead the developers are putting all their energy into making progress toward release.
He also explained that even Star Citizen will not have very large announcements at the event. The plan is to keep Citizencon smaller and more focused. There will not be discussions of Star Citizen 1.0 but there will be updates about the development planned for the next year.
Huckaby tried to calm fans by making it clear that nothing bad is happening. He said that there is no mystery and nothing is being hidden. The project is still on track and moving forward. He also pointed out that some people believe all the company resources are being used only on Squadron 42. He corrected this misconception by explaining that there are actually two different teams. One team is working on Squadron 42 and another team is working on Star Citizen.
In short the reason Squadron 42 will not appear at Citizencon is not because of delays or problems but because the team is too busy making sure the game is ready for the 2026 launch window. The studio believes this is the best way to reach their goal and they are determined to do everything possible to succeed.
Huckaby said that information about Squadron has to remain secret for now. He explained that people watching the livestream were already making guesses about what his words might mean. Some people thought it means one thing and some people thought it means another thing. Huckaby made it clear that what it really means is simple. When the game is ready to release then there will be a lot more news and details shared with everyone. He explained that with Star Citizen the team has always talked a lot. With Squadron the team has chosen to talk less.
Huckaby then explained more about the timeline. As the release year of 2026 gets closer the team will begin to open the doors. By this he means they will share more updates and have more communication with players and fans. There will be trailers. There will be details about features. There will be all the content that people usually expect when a game is preparing for a proper release. He said the most important thing right now is to let the developers focus on making the game itself. That is the only real priority. When the time is right there will be plenty of Squadron 42 content to see.
Later Huckaby went on Reddit and gave some additional thoughts. He said he cannot predict the future. He explained that this is the responsible answer because the way videogames are made means that the future is always uncertain. This is not just about their videogames. This is true for all videogames. Nobody can know exactly what will happen. So when he said that he does not know the future he simply meant that in a literal way. He asked people not to confuse his careful honesty with a negative comment about the game itself.
Huckaby said that he always tries to speak in a very clear and plain way. He does not want to exaggerate and he does not want to create hype that is not real. He explained again that when he says he cannot tell the future he means it in the most simple and direct way possible. In the history of making games nobody has ever been able to say exactly what the future holds. That is just the truth. But Huckaby also explained that he believes in the team. He believes in the people who are working on the project. If he did not have that belief then he would not still be working with them today.
