Mario Kart Fans Blast Total Mess of Costumes in Mario Kart World Direct

Mario Kart fans are not really impressed with how Mario Kart World is presenting its character select screen with all the alternate costumes taking up a huge number of slots.

While it already seemed like we've seen plenty of Mario Kart World at the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. we actually got a chance to see even more of it during its dedicated demo yesterday. That demo didn't reveal much more about Rainbow Road other than a strong hint. but it did give us a chance to take a closer look at the games mechanics and presentation.

Sadly, that was the biggest takeaway from the Mario Kart World Direct as everyone quickly realized just how cluttered the game's character select menu was going to be. It all boils down to the fact that each alternate costume in the game has its own position in the list, making it very difficult to select.

Mario Kart World Fans Criticize Incomprehensible Character Select Screen

During the Direct Nintendo showed some of the characters you can play as in World. There are the usual ones like Mario, Luigi, and Peach, but also some surprising ones like Kou, Lakitu, and even a Goomba. We also got to see some of the games alternate costumes, which are unlocked by eating drive-thru food and then taking up space in the roster.

While alternate costumes are something fans have wanted for a long time, players are not liking the way they are being presented, as they are afraid to look through all 14 pages of characters. The player roster for Mario Kart World is already quite large, but giving each costume its own space instead of being selectable by every driver is a confusing move.

The response on Twitter has been mostly negative with Twitter user stardream61016 pointing out that each costume should be tied to a specific character. Twitter user nathanielbandy1 also took a dig at the roster screen, calling it absolute insanity and a complete mess of costumes.

Other players also pointed out similarities with some of Nintendo's other recent games that have weird UI choices such as Breath of the Wild and Echoes of Wisdom. Overall it seems like almost everyone is confused about why Nintendo decided to organize the character select screen this way and fill it with so many costumes that could easily be their own. I guess it never learned anything from Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach.
