Minecraft worlds are huge but in the regular game only a few players can join at once. Now imagine if there were no limit. You could finish your dream build and invite thousands of players to see it. Picture raiding The Nether with a whole army of builders.

A new Minecraft mod is in the works that could let 100,000 players join the same world at once changing how multiplayer worlds work in the game.

Minecraft mods can be very different. Some make small changes to improve the game while others add big features like new enemies biomes and storylines. This mod is different it could be the biggest one yet. Created by Meta Gravity it tests a technology called Quark. Quark is a network engine that lets multiplayer games be much larger. Instead of one server handling all the data Quark spreads the load across a network of machines allowing Minecraft worlds to support up to 100,000 players.

Mihail Makei a senior software engineer at Meta Gravity explains that Minecraft runs everything on the server like movement combat, and world creation. The client only collects input from devices like the keyboard mouse or gamepad and sends it to the server. To add Quark Multiplayer they completely rewrote the networking system and moved the game simulations to the client. Now everyone who joins the game helps power the world with their computer.

To test the mod Meta Gravity created a bot network to simulate tens of thousands of Minecraft players in one world at the same time. Up to 100,000 players can join and the latest mod version lets you see and interact with 5,000 players at once. With so many players your framerate might drop between 20 and 60fps but you can still move fight dig place blocks and craft normally.

Meta Gravity plans to release the mod for free and will include support for NPCs weather and terrain growth. They will also add moderation and anti-cheat features. The team mentions there will be public playtests before the final launch.
