Nearly a year after its release developer Cyan Worlds updates its Riven remake with ray tracing improving the already beautiful puzzle game.
Videogames wouldn’t be the same today without Myst and Riven. These classic puzzle games made the PC a place for smart and fun challenges that stayed with you. Just like how Doom shaped modern FPS games Riven helped create unique thought-provoking games. Now almost a year after Cyan Worlds released the Riven remake the game looks and plays better than ever.
Without Riven we would not have games like Blue Prince The Witness or Outer Wilds. Riven made by Cyan in 1997 was great at revealing its story and puzzles slowly as you played. You don’t get much help and everything in the game is connected. Some challenges can take days to figure out. It is a unique puzzle game that influenced many of today’s most interesting games.
Now Cyan has made Riven even better. A new Steam update adds ray tracing support for Windows and Mac improving the already beautiful game. With calm waters glowing caves and bright sunlight ray tracing enhances every light and reflection.
Cyan has also added more features. Riven now automatically adjusts supersampling settings based on your scalability choices making visuals even smoother. If you are using Windows and have the right hardware you can play Riven with DLSS 4.0. Intel XeSS and TSR supersampling.
Some small parts of Riven look better now. Gehn’s clothes have better fabric details on Windows and Mac and the lighting in the Survey Island elevator has been improved to match the original game. You can also see more behind you on the boat in Tay and when deleting a photo in your notebook a confirmation window will pop up to make sure you really want to delete it.
Cyan’s new Riven remake patch includes both big and small bug fixes. The improvements to lighting supersampling and ray tracing are the standout features. Miri gave a great review of the Riven remake last year and now the game looks better than ever.
