A few weeks ago, I mentioned that Star Wars works for any type of game like an MMO RPG or XCOM-style strategy game. I am back now to say it again in a different way: Star Wars can even be a horror game.
Is a Star Wars Horror Project in the Works?
This article is in response to comments made by Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy following the leak of Bit Reactor and Respawn's new Star Wars tactical game Star Wars Bruno. In March, Gilroy joked to SFX Magazine that Andor's success might lead to a sitcom or horror project set in the Star Wars universe.
Then, speaking to Business Insider earlier this month Gilroy furthered his previous comments saying. They're doing it I think they're doing it. I think it's in the works yes.
This isn't an official confirmation and it is not very clear. but I still had some work to do on my desk.
Star Wars Needs a Major Shift to Survive
Star Wars has been moving more and more into this genre over the last few years. Endor is a spy thriller that mainly focuses on the Rebellion and political drama, instead of the usual Jedi. Similarly Star Wars Outlaw lets us play as a villain. Skeleton Crew is a pirate adventure designed for kids. It is a not all just epic space opera vibes anymore. There's even a Star Wars novel called Death Troopers in which a virus takes over zombies.
But Star Wars has always been a little scary. Anakin Skywalker killing children and Darth Vader's ability to kill people from a distance are both very scary things that could easily create nightmares for weeks even years if portrayed differently. And There is a lots of darkness in Star Wars.
It's never made sense to limit Star Wars to just one style. Endor's success with both fans and critics shows there's room for new ideas in the Star Wars universe. People have been watching Star Wars since the 70s, so it's natural they want to see it change. Why keep a franchise the same all the time?
I am biased toward the possibility of a horror project because I love horror and how it tells relevant interesting stories that confront contemporary fears. Star Wars has always done that as the original trilogy was based on dissent over the Vietnam War and how democracy becomes dictatorship. Yes they're still terrifyingly relevant. The Star Wars universe is filled with the same crippling fears as ours. It's a completely horror story.
Star Wars can fit into any genre because it is a whole universe not just one story. A sitcom? Sure I’d watch Seinfeld but not Star Wars. A courtroom drama? I’d love to explore the Star Wars legal system. Star Wars can be so much more than what we have seen. Why not try a horror story?
