When it comes to the cash cow that is the live-service gaming industry, many of Ubisoft's ventures have failed, and it is currently afloat mainly due to the success of Assassin's Creed Shadows. Granted, none of these have been Concorde-level disruptors, but the shutdown of both XDefiant and Hyperscape are two prime examples of this.
However it is many shortcomings haven't prompted Ubisoft to abandon the live-service gravy trail as it has been reported by Insider Gaming says the studio is now working on a new battle royale game and it is strongly inspired by Apex Legends from EA and Respawn Entertainment.
Ubisoft Reportedly Developing Apex Legends-Inspired Battle Royale
According to Insider Gaming, this battle royale had been in development for about two years under the codename Scout and Apex Legends was so central to its design that the game was used as a thumbnail for the project. It will also reportedly feature several of Ubisoft's Apex Legends characters, including Pathfinder Wraith and Lifeline.
According to a source familiar with the project they see the game as an attempt by Ubisoft to take advantage of Apex's dwindling player base and the company believes there's room in the market for another hero-based battle royale title. This is apparently when Ubisoft's own internal research team is investigating what happens next to battle royale games as player numbers continue to decline across all platforms.
Given Ubisoft's track record when it comes to live-service you could be forgiven if you didn't have high expectations for this one. It is hard to predict the success of any of Ubisoft's live services other than big franchises like Rainbow Six Siege and The Division, and even then, these games aren't big enough blockbusters to compete with games like Apex Legends. We’re looking at another battle royale game that might fail, and it is possible it won’t even be released.
