Hollow Knight changed how I think about giving games a real chance. I wasn’t sure about the popular Metroidvania game even though everyone loved it. It took some pushing from friends and two tries before I finally stuck with it and now it’s one of my favorite games. Now like everyone else I’m waiting for news about Hollow Knight Silksong. But just as it feels closer than ever another game Little Mage has caught my attention. It’s a beautiful hand-made twist on 2D action platformers and I’m really excited to try it.

Little Mage is a game made by Violoken an indie developer from the UK. You play as the Aether Mage the first person to wake up in a world destroyed by a disaster. The city of Hornedrose once full of life is now a graveyard where a group of old spellcasters called the Sixteen are trapped because of their role in the disaster. It's up to you to explore the ruined city figure out what happened and try to save what remains much like in classic Metroidvania games.

Right away the beautiful hand-made worlds in Little Mage caught my attention. While it’s easy to compare it to Hollow Knight Violoken has created a unique style of its own. The game offers everything I look for in a great action platformer: tricky navigation that rewards skillful movement tough boss fights that test your abilities and a lot of character growth with chances to level up unlock powerful gear and customize your playstyle as you explore.

You can expect a lot of spells with elemental magic being a big part of the game. You will be able to use fire earth, metal, aether and more. I'm especially interested in the huge explosion at the end of the reveal trailer and whether we will be able to use it too.

Violoken says that Little Mage will have a lot of replay value with many secrets to find tons of equipment to help you create different builds and the chance to explore new paths in each playthrough. On top of that there’s DARC a fun card mini-game with thousands of drops. It sounds like I'll get totally distracted from the main quest, just like with Gwent.

There's no official release date for Little Mage yet. but developer Violoken plans to start a Kickstarter soon. You can add the game to your wishlist on Steam if you want to follow its progress.
