Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Outpaces Iconic JRPGs in Sales on Steam

Analysts say that on Steam Expedition 33 sold more in its first week than FF7 Rebirth and Metaphor Refantazio.

Is Clair Obscur Expedition 33 the biggest surprise of the year so far? Blue Prince is a close contender but has not reached the same sales or player numbers. On the other hand Schedule 1 has come out of nowhere but likely won’t win major awards. Expedition 33 stands out as the most unexpected surprise. It’s so popular that even as a new game from a small studio. it is reportedly sold faster on Steam than big JRPGs like Metaphor Refantazio and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

I'm still amazed by how well Clair Obscur Expedition 33 has been received. French studio Sandfall Interactive took a big risk with their turn-based story-driven RPG something Japanese studios have mastered for years and it paid off. The game is doing great Steam player numbers are high. it sold over 500,000 copies in the first 24 hours and has now passed a million sales. Plus it's one of the best games on Game Pass.

A market analytics firm has shared data showing how Expedition 33's success on Steam compares to other games. Even though some of these games have big console fan bases or were ports released on Steam later titles like Metaphor Refantazio Persona 5 Royal Persona 3 Reload. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Like a Dragon 8 all had smaller first-week sales.

Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics says Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is selling twice as fast as other popular JRPGs. It sold 785,000 copies on Steam in its first week.

Alinea says China is a big reason for Expedition 33's success with about a third of the games players on Steam coming from there.

It is crazy that it’s outperforming major RPGs but what’s even more impressive is that it was available on PC Game Pass from day one. Millions of subscribers get Expedition 33 for no extra cost and it’s still selling well on Valve's store.
