Fallout is now owned by Bethesda. but it was originally made by Interplay. Interplay told employees to destroy their work when they left causing a mystery about whether the original code for Fallout 1 and 2 still exists. Tim Cain the series original producer recently mentioned how Interplay didn't care about preserving the games. Now Rebecca Heineman one of the company’s co-founders has said she has backups of the Fallout 1 and 2 source code.

In a recent video Cain shared stories from his career. He explained that after leaving Interplay he was told to destroy everything related to Fallout and Fallout 2. Years later the company contacted him to check if he had ignored those orders because they had lost their own backups of the source code.

In 2023 Cain said that Interplay recovered the code from an old computer in storage and guessed that Bethesda should have it now. But his recent comments suggest that the source code for the two RPGs is still unknown and its location unclear.

Heineman known for her work in video game porting and preservation has revealed that she has backups of Fallout 1 and 2 after porting them to Mac for Interplay's division MacPlay.

Heineman told Videogamer I made it a goal to take snapshots of everything and save them on CD-Roms. When I left Interplay in 1995. I had copies of every game we made no exceptions. When I worked at MacPlay after leaving Interplay I took snapshots of every game we ported including Fallout 1 and 2.

She agrees with Cain that Interplay made leaving employees delete their work. However she says they couldn't take legal action because they had no strong case.

Heineman says fans of the old PC games would like the source code to be available but since the Fallout IP is still active and the games are still sold. it needs permission from Bethesda. He hasn't asked them yet but they are on his list.

The myth is finally busted. Interplay told Cain and other developers to destroy any copies of Fallout and Fallout 2's source code. It seemed to be gone for a while but it's not lost forever. Thanks to Heineman it's been saved.
