Frostpunk 2 is in a bit of a strange spot. It promised to improve on the first games survival experience. but it's having trouble getting as many players. While thousands are still playing the original Frostpunk the sequel has less than 500 players at a time and its reviews are only Mixed on Steam. However there's a lot of new content planned for 2025 and the first major update is available to play for free now. It includes changes to the temperature system and a new map for Utopia Builder So it's a good time to try it out.

Utopia Builder is the big winner in the new Frostpunk 2 update. It gets a new map called The Pit which shows the ruins of a failed generator system. The trailer shows a struggling city next to the old scientific wonder with tough terrain and many dangers that will challenge even the best Stewards.

Next to The Pit there are many new storylines that make up the game’s plot. You can modify them. So you can create and play your own scenarios making each game unique.

In Frostpunk 2 changes to heat management make it more like the first game. At first you didn’t need to worry about individual districts in FP2. As long as the generator had enough fuel areas far from it stayed warm. This is different from the original Frostpunk Where temperature had to be managed in each area.

Luckily that system is coming back and you'll be able to control the temperature in different areas of the map. Your citizens will react based on how hot or cold it is and there are new laws and research to help you get the best out of your generator.

If that all seems too complicated 11 Bit has introduced a new Serenity Mode which is a more relaxed version of the game. The weather is milder there are no faction fights and resources are easy to find. If you’ve ever imagined your cold dystopia turning into a peaceful world this is the mode for you.

Frostpunk 2's first big update is available now. 11 Bit has also confirmed that two new DLC packs and the console launch will happen later this year.
