Overwatch 2 Stadium has helped improve Blizzard's struggling FPS. Although it is still one of the lowest-rated games on Steam recent reviews have become more positive with 45% of players rating it well in the last 30 days compared to its overall 23% positive score. Many players say Stadium is the games turning point making the sequel feel more like a true 2. On May 1. Blizzard announced that with Season 17 and 18 they will introduce new heroes maps the Payload Race mode and crossplay making the game even better.

Let’s look at the numbers. According to Blizzard’s recent blog post Overwatch 2’s new mode is now more popular than Quickplay and Competitive. In just the first week players played 2.3 million matches and spent 7.8 million hours double the amount spent on Overwatch Classic the second most popular mode.

Lucio is the most successful character in Overwatch 2 even though he is the least picked. With so many players choosing Mercy and Moira. it might be worth picking Lucio. However in Season 17 and beyond his dominance could change as new heroes are introduced.

Season 17 coming in June will add Junkrat Sigma and Zenyatta. In August Season 18 will bring Brigitte, Sojourn and Winston, along with a new hero called Aqua who is water-based. After that new heroes will be added every season. I’m hoping for Sombra my favorite or Widowmaker because I just love taking out enemies.

There are some new locations coming soon. Esperanca (Push map) and Samoa (Control map) will be added in Season 17 London and Route 66 in Season 18 and China in Season 19. Season 18 will also introduce a new mode called Payload Race with two special maps.

Season 17 will add crossplay, custom games and the ability to save and share builds. New all-star rewards and the Stadium Trials will arrive in August. Then Season 19 will introduce draft mode to help you choose the best team for the job.

There’s a lot coming up and it is really exciting. As someone who’s had mixed feelings about Overwatch since the second game came out this feels like a big change. Before Stadium was released game director Aaron Keller mentioned that the team wanted to take big risks and try new things and so far it’s working.
