Tempest Rising and Broken Arrow are bringing back old-style real-time strategy (RTS) games. At the same time classic shooting games called boomer shooters are still popular because of games like Selaco, Boltgun and Ultrakill. But what about another old type of game called six-degrees-of-freedom (6DOF)? Games like Forsaken, Descent, Terracide and Adrenix were famous examples. Now a new game called The Waking Ashes mixes those old shooter ideas with space fighting like in No Man’s Sky and Elite Dangerous. You can try this new first-person shooter soon.

6DOF games are a type of first-person shooter. Instead of playing as a person with a gun you control a robot or spaceship. You can move and look around in all directions not just left and right. Imagine playing a shooter where you can turn all the way around and even upside down. That’s what six-degrees-of-freedom means. These games have become a bit popular again recently with games like Overload and Zerograve but they are still waiting for a big return. Luckily The Waking Ashes looks really good.

This game is part space game and part dark fantasy. You play as a character called Fate who fights against a bad copying AI. The game looks a bit like Forsaken from 1998 but it also reminds me of two other games called Devil Daggers and Hyper Demon.

Dan Carey Bailey made The Waking Ashes. The game has loud and exciting sounds. Enemy turrets and creatures quickly move past your aiming sight. The guns make heavy scary noises like they are very loud even in space. So far The Waking Ashes feels like a fast and dark sci-fi game kind of like a tougher gloomier version of the fighting parts in Elite Dangerous.

There is no release date yet. But a demo for The Waking Ashes will come near the end of June 2025. You can add The Waking Ashes to your Steam wishlist now.
