Action roguelike Hordes of Hunger is now available on Steam Early Access. It mixes gameplay from Dark Souls, Diablo, Hades and Vampire Survivors.
Hordes of Hunger a Roguelike ARPG has been on my wishlist for a while and is now on Steam. It mixes the wave survival of Vampire Survivors upgrades like Hades and hack-and-slash gameplay between Diablo's chaos and Dark Souls careful strategy. After a demo in 2025 it's now in early access with a special launch sale.
Hordes of Hunger is made by Hyperstrange the same developer behind the great horror FPS Blood West. This time, they are making an action roguelike inspired by games like Hades and Vampire Survivors. The game lets you fight up close in third-person similar to Soulslike games or zoom out for a wider view like in Diablo especially when enemies come in waves.
You'll fight off monsters trying to attack you while also completing tasks like taking food stores and helping survivors. The gameplay is similar to Vampire Survivors but you have more control. You'll need to dodge, dash or parry to avoid attacks marked by flashing indicators. If you have played Expedition 33 you'll feel comfortable with this.
Some upgrades give steady boosts while others work better if triggered multiple times quickly. They can also give bonuses like saving you from a fatal hit for a short time.
Between runs you return to the Sanctum where your parents live. Here you can change your loadout and cook meals for buffs on your next adventure. The story unfolds through voiced interactions during and between runs like in Hades as you try to uncover the curse affecting Mirah’s homeland. If you are interested you can grab a discount on Steam at launch.
Hordes of Hunger is now available on Steam in early access with a 20% discount until Tuesday, May 13. It costs $11.99 / £10.23.
