Doom The Dark Ages started with fewer Steam players than the other recent Doom games. but that doesn’t mean it’s bad news for the series.

Each of id Software’s recent Doom games is unique. Doom (2016) brought fast action and cool glory kills. Doom Eternal added tricky platforming. Doom: The Dark Ages has bigger levels and a powerful shield. People have different favorites but I like how each game feels different. Still it seems like The Dark Ages is off to a slower start on Steam even though it’s doing pretty well overall.

The new Doom games on Steam have had very different launches. Doom 2016 started strong with a peak of 44,271 players and kept a steady player base. Doom Eternal did even better hitting 104,891 players at launch and stayed popular. The newest game Doom: The Dark Ages had the smallest start reaching a peak of 30,812 players. Even though that’s lower it’s not necessarily a bad sign.

The Dark Ages and Eternal came out after Xbox started its Game Pass service but 2016 was released just before. So many people who might have bought The Dark Ages on Steam may now be playing it through Xbox's PC app instead where it’s cheaper thanks to Game Pass.

Doom The Dark Ages is doing pretty well on Steam. It already has over 7,000 user reviews and 85% of them are positive. While Doom Eternal and Doom 2016 have higher ratings both over 90% they also have way more reviews with over 140,000 each. So The Dark Ages still has time to catch up.

Aaron gave Doom The Dark Ages a score of 8 out of 10 in his review. He said it’s a big step forward for the main gameplay but some of id Software’s new ideas don’t work as well.

I really like the Slayer’s new shield it’s super handy. You can use it to solve puzzles block enemy attacks travel far and even slice demons in half. That said I get why some people might still like the smoother action of the 2016 game. It just depends on what you prefer.
