Gamefusionusa talks to IO Interactive about Mads Mikkelsen in Hitman World of Assassination the new co-op mode and what’s next for the stealth game.
IO Interactive just showed its new James Bond game 007: First Light but it says it’s not done with Hitman: World of Assassination yet. At Summer Game Fest we talked to senior level designer Martin Ansdal who works on the special Elusive Target missions. He told us about the new LeChiffre event and how Hitman has changed over time. In the past nine years. IO split from publisher Square Enix worked briefly with WB Games on Hitman 2 and then published the third game on its own. Ansdal says there’s still a lot more coming for Hitman.
Mads Mikkelsen plays his famous villain from Casino Royale again in the new Hitman: World of Assassination Elusive Target which you can play now. The three Hitman games are now combined into one set. There is also a new mode called Freelancer which is like a roguelike game. The game used to release in parts but now it is one big game that many players keep playing every day even years after the last big update.
More famous people will appear in the game but Ansdal is keeping their names a secret. He says he still wants to make the game big and exciting. In the past the game was less ambitious but because they have very talented people the game needs to be ambitious. IO also said they are working on a co-op mode with Stone and Knight which Ansdal says they have been focusing on for a long time.
Ansdal thinks Hitman has a special mix of gameplay that can keep people interested for many years. He says there are still many things they haven’t tried yet. Even after nine years since World of Assassination started he feels excited to make more. He looks forward to new ideas like the casino level and wants to keep working on Hitman as long as people want to play it.
Hitman is changing how it makes new games. Instead of making one big sequel. it is using a new style called the World of Assassination. Ansdal feels good about the studio’s progress. He says the CEO, Hakan Abrak should feel proud because they had this idea a long time ago even though people didn’t like it at first. The first Hitman game in 2016 used episodes which took some time for people to like. But in the end it became a very successful way to make games.
Ansdal talks about how IO went through many publishers and money problems in the last few years. He says it feels really good to be strong now even when the games industry is having a hard time. The company is opening new studios because someone made a smart choice more than ten years ago and now they are seeing the benefits.
I think if you had only thought about your product in one way back then you might not be successful now. Working on Hitman is fun but in this business it’s not always easy to keep making fun games. You need smart people who can turn it into a good business. Being able to move on to new games again and again is what helps me and my friends keep our jobs.
