Nexus the website for mods of games like Starfield, Cyberpunk 2077 and Fallout is getting new management after more than 20 years.
One of the best games I ever played wasn’t even a full game it was a mod called Elements of Style. It used Max Payne 2 but added new gun effects cool moves like backflips and even its own music. It felt like a more violent version of The Matrix. I still play Brutal Doom and Deus Ex is more fun with the GMDX mod. Even Counter-Strike started as a mod for Half-Life. I really miss those fun mod days like Zombie Panic and The Hidden. Mods are a big part of PC gaming. After 24 years the person who started Nexus Mods is now stepping down.
The best PC games are usually the ones you can easily mod. Games like Fallout New Vegas Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring all have lots of mods. Whether you want small changes or big new versions Nexus Mods is the place to go. Now the original creator DarkOne has said they are stepping down and giving control to a new team.
After running Nexus Mods for nearly 24 years it's time for me to step back says DarkOne. This was a hard choice but I believe it's best for me and the community. I started this project in 2001 from my bedroom using a slow 56k modem and was excited about the upcoming game Morrowind. I didn’t plan to build a business just a place where modders could safely share their work. Over time that small idea grew and became Nexus Mods.
Since then this site has been a big part of my life. For over 20 years I’ve worked on it every day fixing problems, reading feedback, making updates and dealing with community issues. It’s been rewarding but also stressful and tiring. I got so busy I forgot to take breaks or sleep well. Running a big social network never really stops.
Being in charge of the big project I created has been really hard DarkOne says. The job has caused me a lot of stress and health problems. I started to feel burned out and it began to affect my team and Nexus Mods. So I think the best thing for the future is for me to step down and let new leaders take over bringing fresh energy to help Nexus Mods grow and become the best it can be for the community.
DarkOne says they’ve slowly been giving control of Nexus Mods to new people over the past few months. They were looking for the right team to officially take over. For users nothing big will change the site will still focus on mod creators.
DarkOne says It was very important to find a new owner who understands both Nexus Mods and the modding community. After months of meetings, in-person talks and deep thinking I'm very happy to say I’ve found the perfect people for the job.
Yes Nexus Mods has a new owner now. But this isn’t a secret deal or a big company move. It’s just me finally doing what I should’ve done long ago looking after myself.
Now we’re just making things more official and putting the right people in charge to help Nexus Mods grow says DarkOne. We’re also making some quiet changes to how the company is set up but it’s all for long-term stability. We’re not changing what Nexus Mods stands for it will always put the community and mod creators first.
