The old game Painkiller looks amazing now because a big RTX update improved its graphics from 2004.
The game Painkiller is back after more than 20 years. It is a fast and tough shooting game like Quake and Doom. People don’t talk about it much now but it is very good. It has big bosses, nice levels and many strong weapons. The game was forgotten for a long time. But now a new update called Painkiller RTX makes the game feel fresh and new again.
Painkiller is a popular old first-person shooter game. It came out in 2004. The game is fast and exciting like Doom and Quake. You play as Daniel Garner who is stuck in a place between life and afterlife called Purgatory. He wants to go to Heaven to see his wife. But first he has to stop a big fight between Heaven and Hell. If he does he can be free and pure.
Painkiller is still a great game to try in 2025. It has many different levels like a cemetery prison and opera house. You also fight lots of enemies like biker gangs, samurais and zombies. The game includes fun physics effects that make everything feel more real and exciting.
If you want to try Painkiller with better graphics you can In April a creator named Binq_Adams released version 0.1.6 of Painkiller RTX Remix. It gives the old game a fresh modern look. A new video from Digital Foundry shows how great the updated game looks it no longer seems like it's 20 years old.
Just by watching Digital Foundry’s video you can see that Painkiller RTX makes the game’s lighting much better. There are more shadows and the way lights work helps objects look clearer in the game world. If you’ve seen the Half-Life 2 RTX update this one feels a bit like that. The project isn’t finished yet but there’s already plenty to check out.
Interestingly this new RTX version of Painkiller isn’t the only comeback for the game. Anshar Studios and 3D Realms are also working on a full reboot of the series. This new version is a dark co-op shooter where you play as a Champion trying to stop the fallen angel Azazel from sending demons to Earth.
If you want to try Painkiller RTX you can get the files from ModDB. The original 2004 game is also available on Steam.
