Controversial Content? Devs Say You Can Mod It Back
The developers of Ready or Not a game studio called Void Interactive have said that PC players can use mods to bring back some content that has been changed or removed for the console version of the game. They are making changes to the game so it can be approved for release on PlayStation and Xbox. These platforms have certain rules and to follow them the studio has to remove or tone down things like extreme violence blood and gore and nudity.

Because of these changes the same edited version will also be released on PC. This has made many PC players upset and some of them have started giving the game bad reviews on Steam. To respond to this Void Interactive told players that they are allowed to use mods on PC to bring back the old content if they want. The studio also explained that making two different versions of the game one for PC and one for console would be too difficult and expensive so they have to keep just one version for all platforms.

Ready or Not is officially launching on consoles on Tuesday July 15. To get the game approved on these consoles the developers had to make some edits. One example is that after an enemy character is shot and killed players can no longer shoot the body and cause it to break apart or dismember. Also characters who were shown with nudity before are now more covered up in the console version.

These updates are also being added to the PC version of the game. The developers Void Interactive said that these changes are important because they want to make crossplay work. Crossplay means players on different systems like PC and console can play together. But for that to work the game must be the same on all platforms. If the game looks or works differently on each system then crossplay won’t work properly. That’s why Void said they had to make sure the in-game content is equal or almost equal everywhere.

After players started talking and sharing rumors online the developers gave another statement. They said that some people misunderstood what was really changing in the game. They wanted to clear up any confusion. Void said that the game’s gore and violence which are a big part of making it feel real and intense are still the same. They did not reduce or remove those parts.

Void also explained that they believe in letting developers be creative and make games that feel real even if they push boundaries. They said they will continue to support that idea and are not planning to change that in the future.

On the official Ready or Not Discord server a person from the game’s team named Kaminsky who is the community manager at Void Interactive explained some things. A player asked if people would be able to undo the changes made to the game for the console version by using mods. Kaminsky replied with a simple answer Yup. You can just mod everything back in. This means that if players want to bring back the content that was removed or changed they can use mods to do it on PC.

However it’s important to know that if you have mods turned on in the PC version you won’t be able to play with friends who are using the console version because crossplay will not work when mods are enabled.

After these changes many players were unhappy and started leaving bad reviews on Steam. Most of them were upset about what they saw as censorship of the game’s original content. Because of this the game’s recent reviews on Steam are mostly negative. Out of the latest 17,000 reviews only 23% are positive.

One upset player even wrote A fantastic game ruined by the decision to censor the more graphic elements. It was these elements that made Ready or Not the visceral game it was. Massively disappointing.

Some players asked if the developers could make two different versions of Ready or Not one for PC and one for consoles. But one of the developers Kaminsky explained why that’s not possible. He said there are deep problems with how the game’s systems connect and work together and the team cannot fix those problems easily. If they tried to make two versions of the game it would just cause more problems. It would take twice as long to test both versions cost twice as much money and require twice as much work from the team. It could also lead to bugs or differences between the PC and console versions.

Kaminsky also talked about how the team is working hard behind the scenes to improve the game. One big job they’re doing is updating some of the older levels which takes a lot of time. They are also fixing messy or confusing parts of the game’s code which have built up over time. This kind of old messy code is called development debt. The team is slowly taking the game apart fixing things and then putting it back together so it can be improved more easily in the future.

Most people who use the product only notice small improvements like slightly better speed or smoother performance. To them it may seem like just a small update that doesn’t make a big difference. But actually these small changes are very important for the people who build or update the product. These changes make it much easier and faster for them to add new features or fix problems in the future. So even if users don’t see a big difference now it helps a lot behind the scenes for future improvements.
