Why Zombies Don’t Belong in Resident Evil Requiem

Resident Evil games have moved beyond just being zombie games. So if Resident Evil Requiem goes back to that old zombie style it would feel like a step backward.
Why Zombies Don’t Belong in Resident Evil Requiem
Resident Evil 7 is such a great game because it’s full horror from start to finish. Every part of it is made to make you feel scared and tense. It takes a little inspiration from horror movies and old stories but what really makes it special is how serious it is about fear especially after Resident Evil 6 which many fans felt was too silly and action-focused. The story of the creepy Baker family helped bring the series back to its horror roots and saved its reputation.

The Bakers gave Capcom a chance to explore new kinds of fear more psychological and disturbing. After seeing that shocking dinner scene in the game you'll never look at a family meal the same way again. If scary movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre haven’t already made you afraid of old farmhouses in the Deep South this game definitely will. One big change you notice right away especially if you've played older Resident Evil games is the new first-person view instead of the usual third-person camera. But what really makes Resident Evil 7 feel fresh and different is that Capcom fully let go of the usual zombies and focused on something completely new.

Resident Evil 4 came out 12 years before Resident Evil 7 and it was the first game where zombies started to go away. But zombies still showed up again in Resident Evil 6. Even in RE5 and RE4 the enemies like Ganados and Majini still looked and acted a bit like zombies. They were not exactly zombies but very similar. It wasn’t until Resident Evil 7 that Capcom started using new types of horror not just zombies.

Then came Resident Evil Village which went even further away from zombies. The Molded who were slow and creepy only appeared briefly. In this game Ethan Winters returns and the main enemies are Lycans. They are not zombies at all. They are fast strong and look like werewolves made from mold.

Resident Evil Village takes the idea of the mold-based Cadou virus from RE7 and builds on it in a creative way. This time the virus helps explain all the strange and creepy experiments going on almost like a dark science lab full of horrors. The main focus is fighting the four mutant lords of Castle Dimitrescu. For longtime fans who are used to hearing Albert Wesker talk about his plans over and over again this new story feels fresh and surprising. You’re not sure what kind of world you’re in are the threats science-based or something more supernatural? Since it’s not the T-Virus or Las Plagas causing the chaos and the danger is something completely new, discovering the truth is exciting.

Now we have Resident Evil Requiem. The trailer is actually very good. It feels more realistic and serious than most RE games. It has a police-investigation style which is similar to the opening moments of The Evil Within before everything turns crazy and the world starts falling apart.

There’s a feeling of mystery and strangeness in this game kind of like Twin Peaks or Alan Wake 2. We see Grace Ashcroft working at a regular desk job in an office. When her boss calls her into his office she gets nervous. She can’t look him in the eye and has trouble speaking clearly. She’s not like the usual strong and fearless heroes we see in Resident Evil games. She’s very different from characters like Leon Kennedy or Ethan Winters. Grace already seems scared even before facing anything dangerous. That makes her more human and relatable. She’s not just scared of zombies she already has personal fears which makes her story more interesting.

What’s strange is that her boss tells her to investigate a murder at the same hotel where her mother Alyssa Ashcroft (from Resident Evil Outbreak) died. We don’t know why he would make her do that it doesn’t seem like a smart or kind decision. But from the creepy images shown in the trailer it looks like we’re going back to Raccoon City. And yes there seem to be zombies again. This might not be such a good thing.

I know what you’re thinking it feels like Oh no, zombies again like when EA shows off another football game. But video games often improve by building on what works and for Resident Evil that has always been zombies. Still Resident Evil 7 and Village showed us that Capcom isn’t afraid to try new things. Those games were different and still turned out great. Now the series has a chance to grow even more. Capcom could try new types of horror maybe a creepy cult dark folklore vampires or even strange cosmic monsters. There’s so much they could do besides zombies.

There’s another thing to think about all the amazing Resident Evil remakes we’ve already got. Yes the remake of RE3 was a bit too short and changed a lot but the remakes of RE2 and RE4 were incredible. Capcom really knows how to update old games while keeping the important parts the same. Even though they changed some of the story gameplay and locations it all worked out really well. These remakes feel just like the original games fans loved but now they look and play like modern high-quality games.

That’s why it feels like we’ve already gone back to Racoon City recently. Those remakes already give us that classic Resident Evil experience and they do it so well that even a brand-new game in the series might not match up especially since it wouldn’t have the same nostalgic feeling or the strong base of the older games.

So when I saw the RPD building and what looks like a zombie in the Resident Evil Requiem trailer it made me a bit worried. Of course this is just an early trailer meant to show that the game is coming and it's releasing on February 27, 2026. Maybe Capcom plans to try something new again like they did with RE7 and Village.

It’s possible that the zombie is just there to trick us and the real story is much more creative. I hope that’s true because if Requiem is just about shooting zombies in the same old RPD building it might feel a little boring or outdated compared to the newer more exciting parts of the series.

Here’s what we know so far about the Resident Evil Requiem release date gameplay and story.
