Sony might be removing region locks from Steam versions of Helldivers 2 The Last of Us 2 and other games possibly because Stellar Blade did so well.
Sony is now removing region locks on its PlayStation games for PC on Steam. These locks caused problems in many countries especially when Helldivers 2 was released. Other games like The Last of Us Part 2 and God of War Ragnarok were also affected. Now the region locks are slowly being removed possibly because of how well Stellar Blade did on PC.
Even if you haven’t played Helldivers 2 you’ve probably heard about the drama. Sony tried to make PC players sign in with a PlayStation Network (PSN) account to play the game on Steam. This upset many players and because PSN isn’t available in over 100 countries, the game couldn’t be played there at all.
Helldivers 2 got a lot of bad reviews because of this issue. Sony later removed the rule but the game still couldn’t be played in many places. Sony also added PSN login to other games, even single-player ones which caused more complaints.
In some cases you didn’t need a PSN account to play the game unless you wanted to use multiplayer features. But since a PSN account might still be needed the games weren’t available in countries where PSN isn’t supported.
Now as Wario64 noticed Sony is removing region locks from some of its big games on Steam. The most talked-about one is Helldivers 2 but other games like The Last of Us Part 2, God of War Ragnarok and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 are also no longer restricted in some regions.
When Stellar Blade's Steam release date was first announced it had the same region restrictions which surprised the game's developer. But those restrictions were removed before the launch and the game has now become Sony's biggest single-player port.
This success happened without needing a PlayStation Network account or dealing with region locks. Because of that Sony may have decided to make its other Steam games easier to access too.
This might be a mistake or glitch and the restrictions could come back later but we're hoping they don't. If it's not a mistake then it's a good move by Sony even though it took a long time and many complaints. So far Sony hasn’t said anything about it.
