Wildgate Space Shooter Soars on Steam with New Demo

Wildgate a co-op shooter from ex-Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime's new company Dreamhaven is getting popular on Steam after releasing a new demo.

I've played a few Blizzard games so I was really interested when Mike Morhaime started a new company called Dreamhaven. Their first game Sunderfolk is a fun co-op adventure inspired by Dungeons & Dragons I highly recommend it. Now they’ve announced Wildgate a fast and colorful space-themed shooting game. The release date was just shared at Summer Game Fest and the open beta is now live and lots of people are already playing it.

In Wildgate there are three main rules: outsmart, outrun or outgun. You and three teammates must find and secure a mysterious Artefact hidden somewhere in a dangerous area of space called The Reach. But you’re not alone four other teams are also trying to get it. To win you’ll have to fight them both face-to-face and in space battles. Like in a battle royale the last team left wins.

Let’s be honest the most exciting part is the ship battles. In Wildgate your ship is like your home. It’s where you plan before a heist and return after grabbing the Artefact. You’ll need to keep it filled with fuel, ice and ammo. You can also add weapons that match your team’s style. When a fight starts things get wild. So be ready with your gear or sneak onto enemy ships and mess things up it’s your call.

Your ship is important but picking the right Prospector matters even more. There are seven characters to choose from including two new ones: Adrian and Kae. Adrian has a jetpack to attack enemies and escape quickly. Kae uses telepathy to throw things and jump across big gaps. Choosing a good team is very important. One strong option is Ion a big lizard who does double damage he'll likely be a favorite.

The beta also adds three new places to explore: the Drill Station, Juggernaut and Refiner. Each one has new challenges. But since the Reach map changes every match their exact spots won’t always be the same.

The Wildgate beta is open until Monday, June 16 and many new players have already joined. In just 24 hours over 13,000 people played it and more are joining quickly. However the game has Mixed reviews on Steam mainly because of performance and optimization problems.

Dreamhaven and Moonshot Games said that Wildgate will come out on Tuesday, July 22. You can join the beta and add it to your wishlist now.
