Playable Fallout 76 super mutants would be a great addition to the survival MMORPG but Bethesda wants to make sure it is important and fits well.
The Fallout 76 ghoul update was a big hit. Now people wonder if there will be more new ways to play the game. After the new Fallout 76 Gone Fission update came out we talked to the game’s creative director Jon Rush and lead producer Bill LaCoste at Summer Game Fest 2025. They shared some plans for the future. They also said they know players want to play as super mutants but that might not happen soon.
The new Fallout 76 update adds fishing to the game. Earlier this year players could start playing as ghouls. Because of this many fans want more types of characters in the game. Some ideas are robots called synths, or even werewolves. But right now one idea is the most popular.
Rush says people often talk about adding super mutants that players can turn into. But to do that they need to find a special role for them. For example if players want to be strong like super mutants they can already do that with power armor and perks. So, they have to think about what new thing a super mutant or something like a mirelurk would bring to the game that isn’t already there.
LaCoste says he has many good ideas he wants to try but he is careful not to talk about them yet. He doesn't want players to think those ideas are for sure coming. He laughs and says his ideas are really big so he might get in trouble if he shares them. Rush thinks it would be fun to walk in the forest meet Bigfoot and go fishing with him.
LaCoste says About fishing I think I can say this I would love to see a big fish battle in the future. Rush asks Like a fishing battle royale? Since players are already making fishing groups and there will be more local legends later a competitive fishing mode could be a fun way to get players interested again.
