I am also try never to make a habit of annoying overzealous video game fans. And who is Without sin. But I am following this Half-Life 2 RTX Remix drama for the just fews weeks or after playing it myself at GDC for last month so am feelings like I have to clear up the misinformation being spread about it.
Fans are a criticizing individual elements of the Remix's lighting and environments as if it were Sony's next $70 The Last of Us remaster while not recognizing that it is a simply there to show off a very impressive new toolset for modders. So If you are upset by the style of this demo, or you're thinking that Ravenholm shouldn't look so shiny, you're probably missing the whole point.
Half-Life 2 RTX Is More Than Just a Visual Upgrade
If you've seen a short clip of a Half-Life 2 demo on social media with a misleading title, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was an official remaster of the classic science-fiction shooter straight from Valve.
The demo which is included a section of a Ravenholm or Nova Prospekt So that first glance look like the typically modern remaster and become Trending in video Games industry this time. And its a feature HD textures or dynamic shadows or ray tracing the everywhere. But once you understand what is really going on behind Nvidia's Remix, you will understand why it is to much more than a typical remaster.
First and foremost RTX Remix is a modding platform. Nvidia launched its a beta last year and it is a official launch was late last month with the Half-Life demo. So that meant to show what RTX Remix is a capable and what it is q capable of is pretty Amazing.
Even so if you do not know anything about modding or remastering, Remix is quite easy to understand. Remix provides anyone with the tools they need to completely remaster their favorite games which can then be released for free to everyone.
And we are not just a talk to AI upscaling and RTX neural renderings although there is plenty of thats available. What is a most notable about Half-Life 2 RTX is the amount of work that's gone into replacing nearly every model in the game with new, hand-crafted high-definition assets. I assure you that your senses will be blown away when you see it for yourself.
Half-Life 2 RTX Has Mind-Blowing Detail You Need to See
I had the chance to play a demo with Aidan Hastie, a 3D artist working on Half-Life 2 RTX at Orbifold Studios, and he showed me some of the fine Detailing thats team is painstakingly add The every inches Half-Life 2. Something as simple as an electric meter mounted on the side of a building has been perfectly modeled, using a variety of materials like metal rubber or plastic each of which have been accurately created and provided with their own authentic reflections.
Hastie said it was a lots of works to sift through schematics and system manuals to ensure the accuracy of all these real-world objects. As am putting on my face to the glass part of meters read it all little numbers printed on it and am see distorted reflections of the burning window of buildings in glass and I am also shock. This is the level of realism you can achieve using RTX Remix on older games.
So If you have a play any remasters, you will know that they aren't just mods. At the level Orbifold Studios is working on, a remaster would have to be a completely different game with the original game either remastered or substantially altered to suit the new look and feel. The magic of RTX Remix is thats it us5 a mod. When you play Half-Life 2 RTX and you are playing the original Half-Life 2. It is a exactly the same gameplay, with the same levels and the same physics. Everything Orbifold Studios created, and all the technical wizardry provided by Remix is flowing into the game, transforming it in real time.
As you Playing this mod every brick wall, every head crab and every power meter is being replaced by a new version in real time. The same goes for a all greatest ray tracings effects realistic reflections and ambient lighting of the atmospheric effect all dynamically Rendered in a real time. The greatest part is that there are countless games waiting for a Remix as soon as someone finds the time for it.
So when you see a screenshot of Half-Life 2 RTX and comment that it is a too shiny you are missing the point. What Orbifold is doing on projection is incredible so I am a willing to forgive them for over-exaggerating the ray-tracing to show what Remix can do. The team is made up of some of the biggest Half-Life fans in the world, who have previously worked on other well-received Half-Life mods and so my think is Half-Life 2 RTX in a safe hands.
