Portal Fantasy was recently released on Steam. It features creature trapping and battles of creatures from Palworld with the pixel art aesthetic of Stardew Valley.
Despite flying too close to the sun for plagiarism, Palworld remains one of the biggest and best creature collection games on PC. It became a viral sensation when it launched, blending a Rust-style survival game with a Pokémon fantasy feel that's been hugely popular. Now, turn-based RPG Portal Fantasy attempts to present its legion of monsters in a top-down, pixel art experience that not only resembles the vibes of the early Pokémon games, but also gives off a heady Stardew Valley energy.
Freshly launched on Steam today after a slight delay, Portal Fantasy takes you to the kingdom of Pili. This pixel world might look idyllic and vibrant on the surface, with it is quaint towns and forests filled with collectible monsters called Porbles. However, there's a sinister underworld out there that revolves around corrupted Porbles, secret organizations, and an ancient enemy. You will also have to deal with environmental puzzles and obstacles along the way that's no easy task.
But what do you do with your Porbles? Of course the main thing is to fight them. While this RPG's worldwide exploration is top-down like the first few generations of Pokémon games, its battle scenes take on a static, lateral perspective. Combat is turn-based unlike the real-time experience you get in Palworld and some other modern Pokémon titles.
There are 70 Porbles to collect at launch (more will come in future updates) but even two of the same Porble can be very different from one another. Using the fuse mechanic which requires a certain amount of materials obtained and found during the game, you can create new forms of your creatures, unlocking new skills stat boosts and even visual changes.
Portal Fantasy is now on Steam. You can get it for 10% off until Wednesday April 23, for only $17.99 / £14.39.
