One of the biggest franchises in the world, Star Wars has been adapted into basically every imaginable video game genre. We have action-adventure Metroidvania with Souls-influenced combat and Uncharted-esque traversal in the Star Wars Jedi games. We have classic RPGs in the form of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
We have the open world stealth of Star Wars Outlaws. We have VR games, shooters, point-and-click adventures, MMOs, fighting games, space simulators, even pinball. If you can dream it and it is probably Star Wars.
Star Wars Meets XCOM? Why It is a Perfect Match

And yet somehow developers are a still findings New way to interpreted the Star Wars universe in the video games. Screenshots of a previously announced Star Wars game by Electronic Arts Respawn (which is also behind the Jedi series) and Bit Reactor have leaked, and it looks a lot like XCOM.
This probably shouldn't be surprising - we knew the project would be a strategy game since its initial announcement in 2022. Bit Reactor has a pedigree of developers who have worked on XCOM, Civilization, Gears of War and Elder Scrolls Online, so it seems natural that its game would be inspired by its shooter and tactical heritage.
But man, it looks a lot like XCOM, although it's worth noting that the screenshots are from 2023 and the game almost certainly looks different now. The images show characters taking cover while aiming, hit chance percentages on enemies and Mandalorian princess Bo Katan as the player character. It also features an overwatch capability similar to XCOM, where your character will shoot anything that comes into his line of sight.
Star Wars Can Be Any Game Endless Possibilities in the Galaxy
The leaks themselves aren't that interesting, especially considering they're fairly old screenshots. We'll get a more detailed look at the game during Star Wars Celebration later this month. What's most interesting to me is that although Star Wars has been involved in almost every kind of game, as more genres emerge, Star Wars is fitting into them.
This is a Very good time to get involved in the tactical turn-based genre that considering we are seeing a bit of a resurgence right now. Although the somewhat niche genre has not achieved mainstream success modern classics like the new Like a Dragon game and Persona are carrying the torch, and critically acclaimed games like Marvel's Midnight Sun and Tactical Breach Wizards have done a lot to remind players that there's a lots of the potential here. The upcoming Clair Obscurant: Expedition could be the game that brings this genre into the mainstream meaning Bruno will be in a very good position when it finally launches.
I can not help but wonder what other genres Star Wars will enter now. Perhaps a life simulator focused on a single city like Coruscant? Maybe a roguelike shooter like Returnal? Hey, why not a deckbuilder? Developers have been clever enough to adapt much of Star Wars lore and world into almost anything. I would not be surprised to see a Star Wars strand game someday.
