Why Turn-Based Tactics Spin-Offs Like Star Wars: Zero Company Just Work

Turn-based tactics games make great spin-offs. Most game series could work well in this style. Call of Duty? Sure, the multiplayer maps are already designed to feature two teams competing against each other, with distance line of sight, and cover taken into account. GTA? Add some car fights and sneaky levels to collect resources, and you have got a great game. Gears of War? That's already happened.

I am so glad to see that Star Wars is finally getting a turn-based tactics game called Star Wars: Zero Company. There is not much info yet. but we know it is a single-player game coming soon to Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC. It’s being developed by Bit Reactor with help from Respawn and Lucasfilm Games.. Bit Reactor is primarily made by former Firaxis developers, so the game is powered by XCOM technology.

The Bar Is Set High for Turn-Based Tactics Games

I am usually enjoy turn-based tactics games whether they are tactical RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 or pure strategy games like Into the Breach or UFO 50's Bug Hunter. I love this type of gameplay so much that it can get me really hooked on a game, even if I am not a fan of the franchise.

I was tired of Marvel content when Marvel's Midnight Sons came out in late 2022 and it is release date after the GOTY list made it less important to me. But once I got around to it. it became one of my favorite games in years. The fun Tactics gameplay and the exciting haunted castle setting made a great combination and for the first time in years, it got me excited about the Marvel license.

I like Star Wars more than Marvel but I am starting to get tired of it because it's everywhere on Disney+. Now I mostly just watch Endor and a few other things. But what if Zero Company is good? I will definitely get into Star Wars again.

Being Tactics really works for everything. Action game franchises like Gears of War were successful with Gears Tactics. John Wick Hex got good reviews. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are starring in Strange Scaffold's upcoming Tactics game, and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance got a strategy game shortly after the series came out on Netflix. RPG series like Final Fantasy and Fallout have also received Tactics spin-offs sometimes more than one. Mario, known for his action-packed gameplay also has some interesting spin-offs in the Mario + Rabbids games.

Don’t Laugh at My Tactics They Might Just Work

Do you know how on April Fools Day developers make funny posts about how they're making dating sims based on their properties? The joke is that players love their characters so much that the developers are giving them what they wanted. Sometimes, they even make related visuals novels that like when Sega released The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog for April Fools' Day in 2023.

This joke reflects an underlying truth: a large portion of fans want to play those games. Turn-based tactics games are not made to be jokes and releasing them as a joke requires a lot of effort. Just like some fans of every series love dating sims, some also really enjoy Tactics games. and I am happy that Star Wars is giving those fans what they want.
