Discover a new energy source in Tempest Rising, a game inspired by Command & Conquer and perfect for RTS fans.
Do you miss the old days of RTS games? The upcoming real-time strategy game Tempest Rising is the blast from the past that strategy fans need, using classic Command & Conquer gameplay while polishing up the graphics streamlining performance with Unreal Engine 5, and even bringing back award-winning Red Alert composer Frank Klepacki for the soundtrack.
Based on an alternate history of 1997, Tempest Rising posits the idea that the devastating fallout of the Cuban Missile Crisis led to the mysterious energy-draining Tempest Vinelets spawning on the planet. The exact nature of this powerful new resource is unknown, but as you might have guessed it is potential wartime uses are abundant with multiple factions attempting to claim territory using this mysterious energy.
You'll build your base from scratch and strategically manage units to strengthen your defenses and thwart the opposition. You'll also manage resources and build up your armies before sending them to destroy your enemies. Expect surprise attacks, invasions, and devastating counterattacks.
At launch, you can choose from one of two available factions: the peacekeeping Global Defense Force (or GDF) or the heavy-hitting Tempest Dynasty, each with its own units, resources and core mechanics.
The GDF has three unique ways to conduct its plans: Comms Intel and Networked. Comms uses GDF's psycom technology to enhance the capabilities of fighters in real-time improving their reaction while Intel enables its forces to analyze enemy units and formations helping to formulate in-depth strategies.
For distance-based attacks, focus on networked units to greatly improve the power and range of powerful assault-based weapons. All of these work together to fulfill GDF's overarching gameplay goal of positional warfare and precision strike focus.
Opposing GDF is the ruthless Tempest dynasty. Their unique resource system consists of building upgrades, distribution mode, and schemes.
Building upgrades do exactly what you'd expect them to do, allowing for the upgrading of important structures that already exist. Distribution mode focuses on logistics and production-based facilities, and powers up nearby factories and their weapons with Tempest, increasing their damage.
As you might expect with a greater reliance on a fundamentally new source, excessive panic over the use of unstable Tempest energy puts your systems at risk of exploding. This can deal a major blow to your defensive strategy, and give the watchful eye of the GDF more opportunity to counter-attack. Pay equal attention to Tempest Dynasty's planning mechanics to provide significant boosts to defense, offense, or resource collection, balancing them and mitigating potential troubles from using Tempest incorrectly.
All of these resource mechanics embody Dynasty's high-risk, high-reward playstyle, making it perfect for those who live a life of adventure. These will also include the fearsome Vaeti, an ancient civilization that has weaponized the Tempest and may even be capable of traveling in space. They will play a major role in the game's two launch-day campaigns, but as a playable faction they will only be revealed a little later.
The Global Defense Force and Tempest Dynasty each have full single-player campaigns at launch. These are mission-based and narrative-driven skirmishes similar to C&C's Tiberian Dawn or Red Alert campaigns.
skirmish is a PvE mode that pushes you to achieve objectives on the battlefield. As you prepare and equip your base of operations on the desolate wasteland and you will find valuable neutral buildings that you can capture or deploy to enhance your army's abilities.
Since each faction has units unique to their combat style or you will need to master both to understand how to fight against the other side. Change and customize your unit's abilities between missions to complete each objective in a creative way, exploit enemy weaknesses, or address the weaknesses of your favorite strategies.
Since unique scenes bridge the gap between the 11 main missions in any campaign you will get a better sense of the war between factions fighting deadly battles for control of the Tempest energy bubble on the planet's surface.
The multiplayer eschews objective-based missions and focuses on classic, hard-hitting PvP wargames in competitive ranked and more casual matches. These are perfect for testing high-stakes or bold new strategies before climbing the ladder.
Tempest Rising is a must-play RTS that offers both familiar and new gameplay. Avid RTS players will recognize its base-building and resource management, but its faction-specific playstyles really mix things up, and challenge you to think on your feet and adapt to the competition. Changing army composition between missions keeps things fresh and opens up a deeper level of in-depth strategy building.
Tempest Rising is made by Slipgate Ironworks and will be released on April 24. It’s published by 3D Realms and Knights Peak.
