Players usually don't complain about developers being too open. Game development is often kept secret for better or worse. But recently Intrepid Studios the creator of Ashes of Creation, got criticized after they publicly shared their internal deadlines some of which were missed. In reply creative director Steven Sharif asked fans to stay calm and said the team will keep being open about development even if some players don't agree with it.

After the team’s reveal on Wednesday, April 30. which showed new content for Ashes of Creation’s upcoming Alpha 2 test some players quickly criticized the new ocean zone the Turquoise Sea and the spooky Jundark Jungle.

The MMORPG update includes new features like ship sailing and a new starting area. However, some players feel that Intrepid hasn't kept some earlier promises like adding Guild Banks which were supposed to be added during Alpha 2 Phase 2. This phase is ongoing and will last until Monday, August 4.

One player on the game's official subreddit says For every system Intrepid promises but doesn't deliver. they add something else to the game with no set date. I no longer trust their promised dates since they often promise a lot but fail to deliver important features.

Sharif says this happens because different teams work on different parts of the game so features are released when they’re ready. The original poster responds asking the team to stop giving release dates for updates as they prefer surprises like new biomes being added without set dates. They also mention that constantly changing release dates for major updates without real changes has left many players frustrated.

Sharif explains that the team stands by its decision to give estimated release dates. He says When we share updates We always mention that development is a work in progress and can change. Many people ignore this and think of updates as promises but they are just goals or targets. Some will be achieved others might not. That's how open development works.

Although you might want us to stop sharing So much information many people don't. We've decided to be open about our progress even if it means we don’t always meet our goals.

There is a part of game development focused on making things run smoothly. Sharif says An MMO is one of the most chaotic types of games to develop especially something as complex as Ashes. Managing this development while also showing it to the public can be tricky and sometimes has its challenges. However our goals are clear and shared publicly on the Wiki.

I signed up to try Ashes of Creation but haven't had the time yet. The new zones look amazing though. Maybe Alpha 2 Phase 3 will be the perfect time for me especially since you can now play as a Rogue. We will just have to wait and See.
